Eridanus Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Acamar on April 12

Fixed star Acamar, Theta Eridani, is a binary system in the constellation Eridanus, the River. Combined magnitude 2.88. The main component is θ1 Eridani, and its companion is θ2 Eridani.

  • θ1 Eridani, magnitude 3.18, spectral class A3IV-V
  • θ2 Eridani, magnitude 4.11, spectral class A1V

The name Acamar is from the Arabic آخِر النَّهْر (Ākhir an-nahr), which means the end of the River.

The Greek astronomer Claudius Ptolemy described Acamar as a first-magnitude star in the 2nd century CE. Some believe that he was, in fact, describing Achernar, the brightest star in Eridanus. However, back then, Achernar was not visible from Alexandria, from where Ptolemy made his observations. While the astronomer may have indeed heard of Achernar and mentioned it, it is also possible that Acamar was a first-magnitude star in ancient times. [1]

Acamar Astrology

The star at the end of the river in the ancient catalogs was Acamar; spectrally (A3), it has the nature of Venus. It is said that Acamar gives success in public office or in the church. [2]

SPECTRAL CLASS A: These bluish-white stars give great honors, artistic appreciation, unexpected gains, good fortune, riches, good judgment, sociableness, creativeness, idealism, and impulsiveness. Challenging aspects cause wantonness, indiscretion, scandals, foolhardiness, destructiveness, cleverness, many anxious moments and self-seeking nature. [3]

Anonymous of 379 AD said Acamar resembles Jupiter and Venus. [4]

Achernar was too far south to be seen by early Arab or Greek astronomers. Books list it as having a Jupiter styling from Ptolemy, and there is no reason to deny such a fine star that honor, but Ptolemy did not even know of it! The star that he knew by that name and Jupiter styling was θ Eridani, now renamed Acamar, where the river once ended.

Both stars, however, carry in astrology a note of one who is blessed with a direct line, as it were, to the Source of All Being and who is able to bring back something to fortify his or her position in the world. Achernar almost never fails to show this up in the horoscope, unless severely afflicted by aspect, when it may indicate a show of ‘all’s well’ more than the real truth of the situation.

Acamar needs better aspects to make the same grade, and its proximity to α Cassiopeia, Schedir, increases the possibility of a pretender to honor and fame rather than one who really has them. Even so, it is very far from being a ‘malefic,’ and both stars often do reveal a high degree of spiritual attunement on the horoscope. [5]

Constellation Eridanus

The River, with the exception of Achernar, is like Saturn. It gives a love of knowledge and science, much travel and many changes, a position of authority, but danger of accidents, especially at sea and of drowning. [6]

This constellation portends rain. Modern astrologers claim that the constellation gives a love of knowledge and science, but there is no support for this contention in classical astrology. Eridanus does, however, indicate events concerned with rivers and streams. Ptolemy states that the star at the end of the river has a nature like that of Jupiter, and the other stars in the constellation have an influence akin to that of Saturn. [2]

    • Unfortunately not much research done on this star. I would look to see if your AC is also within range of the previous star, Baten Kaitos.

  1. Hi Jamie,

Your knowledge of fix star is amazing! it’s fascinating to discover these little gemstones that gives lot of nuances to a chart. My MC (22.12) is sandwiched between Acamar and Baten Kaitos, although the latter is probably some degrees closer. When you mention that one is of Saturn nature and the other of Venus nature: Should I understand that it mitigates or increases the bad things of Baten Kaitos?

In fact, I have been wondering whether it could give nuances to my career or public image. Something like to fight (Aries MC) on the one side with a high degree of spiritual attunement for those who face compulsory transportation, change or emigration, misfortune by force or accident, shipwreck but also rescue, falls and blows? and other side it exposes one to love of knowledge and science, much travel and many changes or a position of authority?

I am also intrigued by the fact that both star mention “danger of accidents related to the sea”…I like the sea but as a good earth sign I am by far more comfortable on solid ground!…when it comes to my profession I have worked sometimes on matters linked to accidents related to the sea and I must say that I have been holding public office …

Many thanks for writing on such interesting matters!

    • Thanks Meli, I have my Saturn here so understand what you mean. Yes, the Venus nature does soften the Saturn nature because of being midway between the 2. These nuances you notice will depend on other aspects to your MC as well.

      • Awesome!! I discovered and understood many things with eclipses this year as many of them activated my chart but now I am fascinated by the amount of nuances and things that transiting Uranus to MC is activating !

  2. I have Venus and Jupiter conjunct Acamar! Do you think that would do anything since Acamar has the nature of Venus and Jupiter?

  3. Id like to know more about this star and how it affects planets more. I have this conjunct both sun and Chiron in 5th. Perhaps the ability to utilize chirons ability to heal oneself and identity. I have spiritual leanings.
