Fixed Star Dschubba

Scorpio Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Dschubba on November 25

Fixed star Dschubba, Delta Scorpii, is a binary star located on the right claw of the Scorpion, Scorpius Constellation. The two components are designated Delta Scorpii A and B

  • Delta Scorpii A: Avergae magnitude 2.29 (varies from 1.59-2.32), spectral type B0.3 IV.
  • Delta Scorpii B: Magnitude 4.5, spectral type B1-3V. [1]

The traditional and official name Dschubba was likely derived from the Arabic Al Jabhah, meaning “the forehead” and referring to the forehead of the Scorpion. Dschubba is the middle star in what was historically known as the Crown of the Scorpion. It was also historically known as Iclarkrav, derived from the Arabic Iklil al Akrab, meaning “the crown of the scorpion.” [1] Yet another name, Isidis, probably comes from the Egyptian Isis.

Dschubba Astrology

Fixed star Dschubba has the spectral types B0.3 and B1, indicating the planetary nature of Jupiter.

ISIDIS. δ Scorpii. Situated near the right claw of the Scorpio. According to Ptolemy it is of the nature of Mars and Saturn; and to Alvidas, of Jupiter in square to the Moon. It causes sudden assaults, malevolence, immorality and shamelessness. [2]

DSCHUBBA. δ Scorpii. A sub-giant. Spectral class BOn, the ‘n’ indicating that the star has peculiarities. It Was known as the ‘Tree of the Garden of Light’. It is located near the right claw of the Scorpion. Also known as Acrab. The star imparts to its natives a fondness for power, victory over enemies, a grandly liberal person, kingly preferment and negatively it creats assaults, immorality, shamelessness,  malevolence, hidden secrets. [3]

Dschubba and Acrab in the forehead were given the natures of Mars and Saturn by Ptolemy. However, both are B-type stars and should have a nature of Jupiter. In classical times some astrologers considered Dschubba to have the effect of Mercury. [4]

Acrab and Dschubba, both in constellation Scorpio, and positioned next to each other, are supposed to correspond to a Mars character with a blend of Saturn characteristics. Dr Koch is of the opinion that both these stars are doubtful; the effect of these two stars has yet to be researched more fully. According to tradition, these fixed stars are credited with giving the ability for research, especially into things of a particularly secret and hidden nature. For this to be, however, further influence of the sign Scorpio and planets Mercury and Uranus have also to be present; preferably these stellar bodies would be positioned on the Midheaven or Ascendant and be near another stellar body pointing to mental capabilities. In lower types, however, a tendency to falsehood and treason can be noted. Both stars are a poor augury for material wealth. There will be difficulties, impediments, or loss, dependent upon the position these stars have in the cosmogram. In mundane maps, there is an indication of mass catastrophes should Mars, Saturn or Uranus be in this first degrees of Sagittarius, especially if in an angular position. [5]

δ Scorpii is better named as either Isidis or Dschubba. The origins of both names are obscure but the first probably connects with the Egyptian goddess Isis; the second looks like a pretty amateurish Germanic corruption of Al Jabbah, the Forehead., which is where we find it on the Scorpion. Since that name has already been used for a star in the forehead of Leo, we shall do better to keep it here as Dschubba, the clumsy spelling notwithstanding. The Babylonian title Qabu sha Rishu Aqrabi, Centre of the Head of the Scorpion, confirms our ‘guess’ at the Arabic title before it was transliterated by Herr Somebody, but a still earlier Mesopotamian culture had it as Jia Jan Ju Sur, which seems to have meant the Forbidden Tree of Life in Eden. So again we find this Constellation luring us back to look at our own origins as a species of living creature.

Acrab and Dschubba may be regarded effectively as one unit. Together with two or three other minor stars very close by, they were known collectively as Al Akil Al Jabbah, the Crown of the Forehead (of the Scorpion), and just about the only part of this Constellation to have been regarded as auspicious.

Ptolemy classes them as Mars-Saturn stars, not a very delightful combination, yet one which makes a certain sense when we remember that a scorpion’s armament is at the rear, not in the head where this star is. It is in fact a fighter of very great skill, and that characterizes Mars-Saturn perfectly. Anyone with these stars strong in their horoscope is likely to show a patient and wary approach to any situation, but this will belie the skilled determination which will then be brought to bear.

Scorpio is famous for the surgeons born in it and this star shows up just the qualities which they need to have. The same applies to generals, policemen, private investigators, and secret service agents, many of whom have Acrab or Dschubba well placed and aspected. In research of all other kinds too, they distinguish the real adept. [6]

Fixed star Dschubba rules the left side of the buttocks. [7]

Constellation Scorpio

Ptolemy makes the following observations: “The bright stars in the front of the body of Scorpio have an effect similar to that produced by the influence of Mars, and partly to that produced by Saturn: the three in the body itself . . . are similar to Mars and moderately to Jupiter: those in the joints of the tail are like Saturn and partly like Venus: those in the sting, like Mercury and Mars.” By the Kabalists Scorpio is associated with the Hebrew letter Oin and the 16th Tarot Trump “The Lightning-Struck Tower.” [2]

The Scorpion was the dreaded symbol of darkness in the region of the Euphrates. Comets in this region of the sky were said to portend plagues of “reptiles” (read as locusts or other insects harmful to agriculture). In Classical Scientific Astrology the fruitful nature of Scorpio was mentioned. This attribute also applies to the constellation. The constellation of the Scorpion has been considered unlucky from earliest antiquity. [4]
