Fixed Star Foramen

Constellation Argo Navis [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Foramen on October 15

Fixed star Foramen, Eta Carinae, formerly known as Eta Argus, is a stellar system containing at least two stars in The Keel of the Ship, Carina Constellation, which is still called Argo Constellation in astrology. Magnitude −1.0 to ~7.6. Last reading in 2018 was 4.3. [1] Spectral class B9V + O3V [2]

Previously a 4th-magnitude star, it brightened in 1837 during the so-called “Great Eruption”, becoming the second-brightest star in the sky between 11 and 14 March 1843 before fading well below naked-eye visibility after 1856. It has brightened consistently since about 1940, becoming brighter than magnitude 4.5 by 2014. The stars of Foramen are now obscured by the remnants of the Great Eruption, the Keyhole, or Homunculus Nebula. [1]

The primary star is extremely unusual, similar to a luminous blue variable (LBV). It is expected to explode as a supernova in the astronomically near future. This is the only star known to produce ultraviolet laser emission. The secondary star is hot and also highly luminous, probably of spectral class O, around 30–80 times as massive as the Sun. [1]

The name Foramen means Hole (in Latin). [3] In Chinese astronomy, Eta Carinae is called 天社 (tiānshè), Tseen She meaning “Heaven’s altar”. [1]

Foramen Astrology

FORAMEN. η Argus. An irregularly variable reddish star situated in the stern of the Ship, and surrounded by the Keyhole nebulae. Of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. It causes peril, dignity, piety, usefulness and acquisitiveness, and gives danger to the eyes. [4]

FORAMEN. η Carinae. A small, irregularly variable yellow star in the stern of the ship Argos, surrounded by the keyhole nebulae. Spectral class FO. The star varies from magnitude of 1.0 to 7.4. This star imparts to its natives leadership ability, piousness, a strong spirit, prosperity, eye or ear problems, an intuitive mentality and fluent nature. [5]

Foramen, η Carinae is a Saturn-Jupiter, but its very variable magnitude, anything between glaring 1 and a dim 7, gives it a very Libran quality: tomorrow I will; today I won’t bother, yesterday it seemed a good idea… It is, however, close in longitude to wonderful Spica, so the appeal to take up the quest is definitely there. Of the three stars (Canopus, Markeb and Foramen) we have used to explore with the Argonauts , Foramen must rank second in importance, lacking the brialliance of Canopus but, like the latter, having the best company by conjunction. The name Foramen means Hole (in Latin), possibly because it is not visible at all to normal eyes when its magnitude goes down to 7. [3]

Foramen rules the connection of the two kidneys. [6]

Constellation Argo

According to Ptolemy, the bright stars are like Saturn and Jupiter. Argo is said to give prosperity in trade and voyages, and strength of mind and spirit, but it has been observed to accompany cases of drowning, a notable instance being furnished by the horoscope of Shelley, where Argo occupied the 8th house and contained the Sun, Venus and Uranus. Drowning is particularly to be feared when Saturn afflicts the Moon in or from Argo. It is probably on account of this constellation that Virgo, especially the first decan, is frequently found to be connected with drowning. [4]

Argo is the ship that carried Jason and the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece is today composed of the constellations Carina, Puppis, Pyxis, and Vela. In classical astrology, it is correlative of events concerning the sea and shipping and of rivers and springs. It is also said to be connected with death by drowning, especially if connected with the eighth house. Tetrabiblos asserts that its bright stars are of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. [7]

Descendant conjunct Foramen: John Lennon 1°25′

Imun Coeli conjunct Foramen: Prince Andrew, Duke of York 1°02′.

Sun conjunct Foramen: Danger of shipwreck. [4]

This star imparts to its natives a diplomatic nature, socially conscious, one who views all sides of a question. Negatively a lack of direction, indecisiveness. One who may be easily ‘conned’. With either positive or negative there may be eye problems. [5]

Penny Marshall 0°02′, Richard Carpenter 0°07′, Fela Kuti 0°07′, Katherine Mansfield 0°19′, Sarah, Duchess of York 0°19′, Natalie Maines 0°22′ (and Mars), Bianca Beauchamp 0°27′, Chris Carter 0°41′, Shelley Ackerman 0°44′, Tim Robbins 0°58′ (and N.Node).

Moon conjunct Foramen: The native may be of an intuitive nature, tactful, sympathetic and agreeable. A  strong desire to succeed and a certain ‘dignity’ that attracts others to them. They tend, not to be loners, nor are they gregarious, but are socially conscious. Negatively, these natives tend to procrastinate, rather easily influenced – tend to learn lessons the ‘hard way’ thru experience, but once they have learned, they do not repeat the same mistakes the second time. Eyesight problems possible with both negative and  positive indications. [5]

Jupiter conjunct Saturn conjunct Foramen: Separately, the two planets would affect only occasionally and there would be no disease connected with this. The combination, however, brings on an extreme malfunction of the entire kidney system. There is a blockage of energy here that travels up through the spine and as far as the eyes. Some persons would have the expansion of the Jupiter energy, and others would experience the Saturn energy depending on the orbiting aspects of the planets. If the Saturn energy is affected adversely, the native would experience a restriction of light to the eyes. If the Jupiter energy is adversely affected, there is too much light to the eyes. Both would cause headaches – with Saturn, tiny sharp sensations, and with Jupiter, very sudden headaches. Uranus, Saturn and Mercury orbiting this point would affect the Saturn energy, and the Sun and Venus would affect the Jupiter energy. When Saturn energy is affecting the point, these persons should drink ½ glass of papaya juice diluted with water three times per day, and a little garlic three times per day in food. A drop of olive oil once a day would be very helpful also. When Jupiter energy is affecting this point, there would be an insufficient filtering process so that toxins enter the system. Ginger root combined with spearmint would be an excellent remedy for this problem. [6]

Uranus conjunct Foramen: Adolf Hitler 1°08′

Neptune conjunct Foramen: David Berkowitz 0°10′ (and Saturn), Vladimir Putin 0°19′, Xi Jinping 0°20′ (and Saturn), Harvey Weinstein 0°35′

  1. My ASC is @ 21.34 LIB. There are no conjunctive planets to this point, but the Moon and Jupiter are conjunct and from a wide opposition from Aries, and Chiron and Mercury trine from Gemini. I have always wondered if I should consider Formen or Spica the stronger influence to this point (I think Spica is just within orb here) and generally how one would combine fixed star interpretations when planets or points are within orb of more than one. Thank you!

    • Glad you found that table useful Leigh. I think you are right about an influence from Spica rising in your chart. Very fortunate! I have it conjunct my Mercury and Venus, but opposite Saturn it takes some time to develop the goodies.

  2. Hi Jamie! That “If the Saturn energy is affected adversely, the native would experience a restriction of light to the eyes.” interesting. I had a sudden eye infection at the beginning of 2014 which took months to heal and I light was hurting. I never had that before. If I recall well at that time I had Saturn going over the IC ….could that transit trigger the effects of the star?

    • Yes it could I suppose. I always include the cardinal points for fixed stars. You can learn a lot by not forgetting to include IC and DC.

  3. Hi Jamie, my Mars is conjunct this star (in my 10th house). What is your take on that, being the only personal planet not indicated in the description!! Thanks very much.

  4. I found President Eisenhowers Sun in Libra was conjunct Foramen, which connotes another connection with DDay as this star was considered to be connected with the ship Argo. This was another connection with the mass invasion on the Atlantic on DDay with ships and planes headed for Normandy. A stretch perhaps but I found leadership ability connected with this star which is probably Eike’s best personality trait.

  5. my high school sweetheart sadly drowned the summer of 2008, right after graduation. his ascendant was 22’27 libra…

his vertex (21’40 taurus) in the 8th house was opposite his scorpio conjunction/stellium pluto (17’47) / sun(19’46) / true lilith (21’25) / venus (22’29) , which straddled his 2/8 house axis (19’48) … all of those aligned with Zubeneschamali / Unukalhai territory.

Unukalhai passage- “There will be chronic diseases, which are not easily detected; these will result in a weakened state of health, and operations will be necessary. There will be accidents.” It was discovered during autopsy that he drowned due to having some kind of cardiac attack (i can’t remember the details, which i heard secondhand) due to an undetected enlarged heart. He was a cerebral, gentle person and hadn’t ever participated in sports, i guess while swimming it was too strenuous an activity… at only 17.

incredible accuracy in the stars. i have been looking at the transits of the day he died and have not found as forthright indications, although i will keep researching.

  6. The uv-laser beams of this star are fascinating…. i mean this entity must be really a very special star…what could this mean for interpretation ? Or is it not so important ?

    • Hi Klaus. I am sure all the different wavelengths have some eeffect. A friend of mine has started research on it, as well as recording the “sounds” that different planetary conjunctions make.

  7. Hmmm… and as i see ascendant, sun, jupiter, saturn, uranus or neptune with leaders either good or bad…
