In June 2010 the Taliban have inflicted the heaviest monthly death toll on the allies so for in the war in Afghanistan. “June 7, 2010, marked the 104th month of US military engagement in Afghanistan, making it the longest war in the history of the United States” [wiki].
This week president Obama gave his political rival, General David Petraeus control over military operations in Afghanistan. I am going to look at the chart of the Taliban to see why they are such a thorn in the side of America, and compare their chart to that of the USA.

The data for the chart comes from Astro Databank. Taliban Horoscope
Most importantly for this crucial year of the war, the Taliban Sun is on Zaniah “An attribute of Zaniah can be seen in the Mercury-Venus-in-Libra talent for negotiating peace. One attribute which a good commander must surely need is an intuition for knowing to call a halt to battle and either offer or seek terms for peace. If well aspected and on the right planet, Mercury, Venus, Sun, or Jupiter for example this is what will show up in the horoscope. With Mars or Saturn the terms for peace may be too harsh for acceptance”.
This year, transiting Pluto is squaring the Taliban Sun. The June 2010 Lunar Eclipse also squared the Taliban Sun. This year transiting Saturn is on the Taliban Sun, which is opposite Natal Saturn. This year is crunch time, the Afghanistan government want to deal with the Taliban, and the USA want out. With those harsh aspects, and having Sun opposite Saturn, I’m not sure the Taliban will want to negotiate unless they are given a power-sharing deal. It will depend on how badly the USA want to end this war, and if she is willing to face another humiliation like Vietnam.

The SAMVA USA chart
SAMVA USA chart is a mundane astrology horoscope for the United States of America. The chart is based on the event when Maryland became the 13th and final state to approve the ratification of the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union at 5:00 PM on February 2, 1781 in Annapolis, Maryland. In doing so, the USA effectively came into being as a Perpetual Union. The horoscope was rectified as having 20° Cancer rising (sidereal) using the Systems’ Approach to Vedic Astrology. As Philadelphia (75W10, 39N57) was the capital of the union being formed, this city should be used as the location for the rectified chart with a time of 16:58:33.

The Taliban have this invisibility factor built in to their ops – its hard to pin them down – now they’re here, now there, now where – US are dealing with a force that uses its knowledge of the terrain and its cloaking, infiltration, undercover qualities and hidden, random explosive devices to great effect – the war in Afghanistan is far from clean and clear-cut – and even if there is a crunch this year, either way, does anyone really think this will mean the demise of the Taliban?
So, bearing this in mind, and given this is an event and not a natal chart, I followed a hunch….
The event chart has Sun opp Saturn with Jupiter T’d to both – noticed Pluto, not exactly on IC, but in aspect to Uranus and Saturn – following hunch I checked to see when Pluto hits Tal event Jupiter – its 13th Dec 2012 – on this date there is a new Moon which falls directly on Sibly Asc
This may be an out there extrapolation but my hunch is that the crunch, if not the Taliban down-fall, then the US ascendency over this conflict, or perhaps its fall-out, will be sealed round this time

Rob, that Taliban chart is for when they gained control of Afghanistan to form a government. Even though they were forced from government by the USA, it is really the only option we have for a horoscope.
Rob and Thor, Thanks for that feedback. I’m not very focussed at the moment so will respond properly later. It does seem that no matter what technique, chart, style of astrology is being used, astrologers are all seeing the same thing here. The timing does seem to revolve around August when the Saturn-Uranus-Pluto T-square is in tightest orb.

The beauty of effective astrology methods is to be able to see in advance when strains are likely to emerge and not to get swept up in the events or the associated emotion. That said, in addition to effective methods, authentic natal charts are really important. The two together explain not only the historical trends and significant events of a country, but yield accurate predictions of future trends and events as well!

Thor, regrads the Australian chart, this has been debated on Noel Tyl’s forum extensively. I’m quoting from Alice McDermott: “The Swearing -In Chart, the most useful for anything to do with government and international politics, is mapped for when Australia became a Commonwealth on 1st January 1901. I use the recorded time of 1:35 pm and found it excellent when looking at transits from major events, Gallipoli landing, Darwin bombing, One Tree nuclear test and the Whitlam sacking.
I haven’t had a chance to check out this SAMVA USA chart you have used. It does seem that the Sibly is the most widely used by noted astrologers, eg Greene, Blaschke and Hand. I have looked into it and think it works very well. The big advantage of the Sibley (apart from my thinking it is the best one) is that most astrologers do use it so we can be on the same page when discussing astrology of the USA. Do check out the mundane astrology on Noel Tyl’s Forum. There is a lively debate there at the moment about various USA charts, and it is the very best forum for mundane astrology.

I haven’t looked into the first military action of the Taliban. I guess the advantage of the chart we have is that we have a documented time, and it does represent when they gained total control. It is like a national horoscope, like any other in that way. If the Taliban ever ruled Afghanistan again, we would have a new chart for them. It is a good example of keeping an open mind when deciding which chart to use for a nation or any group or company even.
I treat mundane astrology the same as natal astrology, so I want to know which event represents most the “birth”. It varies depending on the situation, but usually there is one specific event which defines the nation or group. All those conjunctions in the synastry between the USA Sibly and the Taliban charts confirmed it for me, plus looking at the chart itself with the fixed star descriptions and the aspects just makes so much sense.

Thanks Jamie, for the heads up on the Noel Tyl mundane astrology forum. Astro.com also has a popular astrology forum. I read Tyl’s books many, many years ago and liked them. I have no strong view on the Australia chart, as my efforts on it are still exploratory. I’ll check out the event suggested by you. As for the USA chart, I discovered the SAMVA USA chart after a decade long search and found the event it is based on with the assistance of historical scholar John T.W.B. in end 2006. Since then, I have been researching it and discussing on SAMVA discussion list and presenting the key findings on my blog. With regard to your statement that plurality makes right, I would only mention that if the financial collapse taught us anything about groupthink it is that it can create legitimacy for herd behavior based on wrong assumptions. In my humble oppinion, the same is likely true of any chart involving the Declaration of Independece (DOI), including the Sibly chart. The fact is that the states and colonies that were united to declare their independence did so as independent entities not as a single entity. It is my contention that this entity, the USA, came formally into being with 13th and final ratification of the Articles of Confederation and Perpetual Union. [wiki – Perpetual Union]

Afghan government representatives and Taliban insurgents held talks in Doha on Saturday as violence raged in their country amid the withdrawal of foreign forces. Talks were due to resume on Sunday, a spokeswoman for the Afghan team in Doha told AFP.
Representatives of the Afghan government and the Taliban met in Doha for talks on Saturday, AFP correspondents said, as violence rages in the country with foreign forces almost entirely withdrawn.
The two sides have been meeting on and off for months in the Qatari capital, but the talks have lost momentum as the insurgents have made battlefield gains.
Several high-ranking officials, including former Afghan former chief executive Abdullah Abdullah, gathered in a luxury hotel on Saturday after morning prayers.
They were joined by negotiators from the Taliban’s political office in Doha.
Former president Hamid Karzai had also been due to travel to Doha but remained in Kabul, according to a source.
“The high level delegation is here to talk to both sides, guide them and support the (government) negotiating team in terms of speeding up the talks and have progress,” said Najia Anwari, the spokeswoman for the Afghan government negotiating team in Doha.
“We expect that it (will) speed the talks and… in a short time, both sides will reach a result and we will witness a durable and dignified peace in Afghanistan,” she told AFP.
‘Ready for dialogue’.
The Taliban have capitalised on the last stages of the withdrawal of US and other foreign troops from Afghanistan to launch a series of lightning offensives across the country.
“We are ready for dialogue, for talks and negotiations, and our priority is to solve the problems through dialogue,” Taliban spokesman Muhamad Naeem told the Al Jazeera broadcaster ahead of Saturday’s talks.
“The other side must have a true and sincere will to end the problems.”
Talks between the government and the Taliban side led by Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar began with Koranic recitations, Naeem tweeted Saturday.
Pakistan on Saturday partially reopened its side of the southern border crossing with Afghanistan, shut after the Taliban seized control of the strategic Afghan frontier town of Spin Boldak from government forces last week.
Muhammad Tayyab, a local paramilitary official, said the decision was taken because of “relative calm on the other side”, but that the crossing would remain closed to trade.
The Taliban have also tightened their grip on the north, with clashes continuing Saturday in the stronghold of infamous warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, that borders Turkmenistan.
Also on Saturday, the French government flew out around 100 of its citizens and Afghans working for the embassy from the capital, as security deteriorated, a French diplomatic source said.
Several other countries including India, China, Germany and Canada have flown out their citizens or told them to leave in recent days.
There have been weeks of intensifying fighting across Afghanistan, with the Taliban pressing multiple offensives and overrunning dozens of districts at a staggering rate.

As fighting raged over large swathes of Afghanistan, a war of words was also heating up between Kabul and Islamabad, after the Afghan vice president accused the Pakistani military of providing “close air support to Taliban in certain areas”.
Pakistan strongly denied the claim, with a foreign ministry statement saying the country “took necessary measures within its territory to safeguard our own troops and population”.
Islamabad had touted a conference of regional leaders to address the spiralling violence.
Instead it announced it would delay the summit until after the Muslim Eid al-Adha feast, due to start next week at the end of the annual hajj pilgrimage, clearing the way for the Doha gathering.
Afghanistan’s southern border has long been a flashpoint in relations with its eastern neighbour.
Pakistan’s Balochistan province has been home to the Taliban’s top leadership for decades, along with a large contingent of reserve fighters who regularly enter Afghanistan to bolster their ranks.
Foreign troops have been in Afghanistan for nearly two decades following the US-led invasion launched in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks.
They have appeared largely out of the picture in recent months, but fears are growing that Afghan forces will be overwhelmed without the vital air support they provide.
The speed and scale of the Taliban onslaught have caught many by surprise, with analysts saying it appears aimed at forcing the government to negotiate on the insurgents’ terms or suffer complete military defeat.
