The Sun joins Altair on January 22

Fixed star Altair, Alpha Aquilae, is a single star in the neck of the Eagle, Aquila Constellation. Magnitude 0.76, spectral type A7V.

Altair is not spherical, but is flattened at the poles due to its high rate of rotation. It is one of the few stars for which a direct image has been obtained.

The traditional name Altair has been used since medieval times. It is an abbreviation of the Arabic phrase النسر الطائر Al-Nisr Al-Ṭa’ir, “the flying eagle”. It probably goes back to the ancient Babylonians and Sumerians, who called Altair “the eagle star”.

Altair Astrology

ALTAIR. α Aquilae. A pale yellow star in the neck of the Eagle. From Al Tair, the Eagle, or, according to Bullinger, the Wounding. Sometimes called “The Bird of Jove.” Opinions are divided as to the exact nature of this star. Ptolemy gives Mars and Jupiter, Wilson, Saturn and Mercury; Simmonite, Uranus; and Alvidas, Uranus and Mercury in sextile to the Sun. It confers a bold, confident, valiant, unyielding, ambitious and liberal nature, great and sudden but ephemeral wealth, and a position of command, makes its natives guilty of bloodshed, and gives danger from reptiles. [1]

Anonymous of 379 AD said Altair it is like Jupiter and Mars. [6]

ALTAIR. α Aquilae. “The Flying Eagle.” A white star in the Eagle’s neck. Spectral class: A5. The native is bold, confident, valiant, even unyielding. The native can be ambitious and liberal, expect great but ephemeral wealth. The native can become a mischief maker. Negatively; it creates disgrace, misfortune and possible ruin. [7]

Altair, the name of Shaykh Ilderim’s horse in Ben Hur, has the nature of Venus but in the Middle Ages was said to portend danger from reptiles. This probably comes from the basic Martian character of the constellation and the fact that in those days poisoning of an enemy was considered a feminine characteristic. [2]

Altair, in the Eagle, also called the Flying Eagle, has a Mars character with a blend of Mercury and Jupiter. Tied with benefic stellar bodies, Altair is credited with bestowing hardiness, courage and generosity, especially if on the Ascendant. Altair is good for advancement of lawyers and military men. [3]

Altair, α Aquilae, is a Mars-Jupiter type as one would expect for the star whose name means Eagle. Even traditionalists usually like this one; there is no controversy raised when we note that it usually does show up good respect from one’s fellow beings, so long as it is well placed. If it is not, the owner of the chart may be one of those who drops things upon others from a great height. He can be sure he will not go on forever doing that. [4]

Altair rules seven inches below the bend of the left knee. [5]

Constellation Aquila

According to Ptolemy the influence of Aquila is similar to that of Mars and Jupiter. It is said to give great imagination, strong passions, indomitable will, a dominating character, influence over others, clairvoyance, a keen penetrating mind and ability for chemical research. It has always been associated with the sign Scorpio, and by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter Vau and the 6th Tarot Trump “The Lovers.” [1]

Aquila (Aql) or the Eagle portends changes in the weather and is indicative of those with a penetrating mind and clairvoyance. Ptolemy says that its stars are of the nature of Mars and Jupiter, but the brightest stars have the spectra of Mars and Venus. [2]

In mundane astrology Aquila rules the U.S.A., space exploration, bombs and missiles.

Similar to the Sun at Albireo. These persons are basically uncomfortable with themselves because of contradictory energy involved here. The contradiction is in their continuous behavioral patterns. They do not wish to express themselves through the ego. These natives wish to be humanistic human beings and wish to love everyone equally. They want to belong to groups and organizations that are involved in helping humanity such as orphanages, the poor and deprived, and groups organized to feed the hungry around the world. This is the typical person who would join a group such as the Salvation Army, for example. Those financially able to do so, would join groups in other parts of the world involved in these things. There is a problem here, however, in that once they begin active participation in these groups, they wish to receive recognition for their work. The conflict in their behavior pattern manifests when they make demands that their ego be satisfied through praise and admiration from others. If their ego is not totally satisfied, they begin holding back their dedication to the humanitarian group they are involved with. Their ego simply gets in the way; they turn their interests to the financial aspect of their work rather than the humanitarian. The humanistic approach to others is lost as their ego gets in the way. Their real objective is to receive praise from others for what they do and when they do not receive it, they become hostile – a strange turn of events which goes on for a lifetime. [5]
