Fixed star Antares, Alpha Scorpii (α Sco), is a 1st magnitude binary star marking the Heart of the Scorpion, Scorpius Constellation.
α Sco appears as a single star to the naked eye, but is a binary star system composed of α Sco A and α Sco B.
α Sco A, named Antares, is a slow irregular variable star ranging in magnitude from 0.6 to 1.6. However, its brightness usually stays near magnitude 1.0. Spectral type M1.5Iab-Ib, distinctly red in color. Antares also pulsates in size, varying its radius by 19%.
α Sco B, magnitude 5.5, spectral type B2.5V, color blue but sometimes appears greenish. α Sco B is a very fast spinner, with a projected rotational velocity of 250 km/s. [1]
α Sco is officially named Antares.
From its ancient Greek name Άντάρης, “Like Ares,” likening the red color of this star to its planetary namesake (the Roman Mars). Reapplied in Renaissance times. (The Greek preposition àντí can mean “like” or “in place of,” as in the present case.) [2]
The comparison of Antares and Mars possibly dates to early Mesopotamian astronomy. Mars is normally considerably fainter than Antares, but outshines it for a few months every couple of years. It also passes near the star every two years, which is likely what prompted the comparisons.
In Babylonian astronomy, Antares was known as GABA GIR.TAB, or “the Breast of the Scorpion.” The name was documented in star catalogs dating back to at least 1100 BCE. In the Babylonian astronomy compendium MUL.APIN, compiled around 1000 BCE, the star marks the breast of the goddess Ishara, who is associated with the underworld and is represented by the constellation Scorpius. [1]
α, Binary, 0.7 and 7, fiery red and emerald green.
Antares, the well-nigh universal title for this splendid star, is transcribed from Ptolemy’s ἀντάρης in the Syntaxis, and generally thought to be from ἀντί Ἄρης, “similar to,” or the “rival of,” Mars, in reference to its color, — the Latin Tetrabiblos [cf. Tetr. I .9] had Marti comparatur; or, in the Homeric signification of the words, the “equivalent of Mars,” either from the color-resemblance of the star to the latter, or because the astrologers considered the Scorpion the House of that planet and that god its guardian. Thus it naturally followed the character of its constellation, — perhaps originated it, — and was always associated with eminence and activity in mankind.
The Arabians’ Ḳalb al ʽAḳrab, the Scorpion’s Heart, which probably preceded the Καρδία Σκορπίου and Cor Scorpii of Greece and Rome respectively, became, in early English and Continental lists, Kelbalacrab, Calbalacrab, Calbolacrabi, Calbalatrab, and Cabalatrab. Antares alone constituted the 16th manzil, Al Ḳalb, the Heart, one of the fortunate stations.
The Hindus used α, σ, and τ for their nakshatra Jyesthā, Oldest, also known as Rohinī, Ruddy, from the color of Antares, — Indra, the sky-goddess, being regent of the asterism that was figured as a pendent Ear Jewel.
It was one of the four Royal Stars of Persia, 3000 B.C., and probably the Guardian of the Heavens that Dupuis mentioned as Satevis; but, as their lunar asterism, it was Gel, the Red; the Sogdians changing this to Maghan sadwis, the Great One saffron-colored. The Khorasmians called it Dharind, the Seizer; and the Copts, Kharthian, the Heart.
It pointed out to the Babylonians their 24th ecliptic constellation, Hurru, of uncertain meaning. Other Euphratean names were Bilu-sha‑ziri, the Lord of the Seed; Kak-shisa, the Creator of Prosperity, according to Jensen, although this is generally ascribed to Sirius; and, in the lunar zodiac, Dar Lugal, the King, identified with the god of lightning, Lugal Tudda, the Lusty King. Naturally, the inscriptions make much of it in connection with the planet Mars, their Ul Suru, showing that its Arean association evidently had a very early origin; and from them we read Masu (?) Sar, the Hero and the King, and Kakkab Bir, the Vermilion Star. Brown identifies it with the seventh antediluvian king, Ἐυεδώρανχος, or Udda-an‑χu, the Day‑heaven-bird.
In Egyptian astronomy, it represented the goddess Selkit, Selk‑t, or Serk‑t [the goddess of protection against the venomous stings and bites of scorpions], heralding the sunrise through her temples at the autumnal equinox about 3700‑3500 B.C., and was the symbol of Isis in the pyramid ceremonials. Renouf included it with Arcturus in the immense figure Menat. [3]
α Sco belongs to the asterism Xin, “Heart,” the first asterism of the 5th Chinese Lunar Mansion Xin, “Heart.” It is known as:
心宿一 Xīnsuèr, “Heart One.”
心宿中星 Xīnsuzhōngxīng, “Central Star of Heart.”
天王 Tiānwáng, “Heavenly King.”
明堂 Míngtáng, “Bright Hall.”
大辰 Dàchén, “Great Star.”
大火 Dàhuǒ, “Great Fire.”
龙星 Lóngxīng, “Dragon Star.”
商星 Shāngxīng, “Commerce Star.”
閼伯之星 Ebózhīxīng, “Ebó Star.” [4]
Scorpius features prominently in Wardaman traditions, which inform the procedures of initiation ceremonies. Merrerrebena is the wife of the Sky Boss, Nardi. She mandates ceremonial law, which is embodied in the red star Antares. [5]

Antares Astrology
The spectral type M1.5 indicates a Saturn nature. Ptolemy (@150 AD) and Anonymous (379 AD) said Antares is like Jupiter and Mars.
The middle one of which is tawny and rather bright and is called Antares, the same as Mars and, to some degree, Jupiter. [21]
Antares naturally followed the character of its constellation, perhaps originated it, and was always associated with eminence and activity in mankind. [3]
ANTARES. α Scorpii.
Notes. A binary star, fiery red and emerald green, situated on the body of the Scorpion. From Anti Ares, similar to, or the Rival of Mars. It was one of the four Royal star of Persia in 3000 B.C., when as the Watcher of the West it marked the Autumnal Equinox. Sometimes called Shiloh and Cor Scorpio, the Scorpion’s Heart.
Influence. According to Ptolemy, it is of the nature of Mars and Jupiter. Alvidas gives Jupiter sextile Venus, but this is unlikely considering the decidedly martial and malefic nature of the star. It causes malevolence, destructiveness, liberality, broad-mindedness, evil presages and danger of fatality and makes its natives rash, ravenous, headstrong and destructive to themselves by their own obstinacy.
Magical. It rules sardonyx, amethyst, long aristolochy and saffron. Its image is a man armed with a coat of mail, or a scorpion. It gives understanding and memory, helps against evil spirits, and the power to drive them away and binding them. [6]
ANTARES. α Scorpii.
A binary star, red and green, on the Scorpion’s body. “The Rival of Mars.” Spectral class MO.
BASIC INFLUENCES: This star gives the native a keen mentality, courage, sudden happenings, unforeseen events, accidents, liberal tendencies, self-destruction, broad-mindedness, and violence. [7]
Antares, Alpha Scorpii.
Antares in the constellation of Scorpio is, as its name Ant-ares says, of Martian nature, but to this Mars nature, powers of Mercury, Jupiter and also Saturn are added. Antares makes people tough, belligerent and pugnacious. This is an important star for military personnel and is said to convey mental alertness, strategic ability and courage and to make daredevils, especially if tied up with the Midheaven, Ascendant, Sun or Jupiter.
If associated with Mars, courage is said to become foolhardiness, leading to increased dangers. Natives with this particular configuration have to be prepared at all times for sudden incidents and unforeseen events, and potential accidents. According to tradition, Antares is of violent character and is credited with being significant for a violent death, either in battle or by the process of law. On the other hand, danger may come about by fire, weapons or machinery.
Antares is also unfortunate for the eyes if conjunction the Asc, Moon or Sun.
Antares was conjunction Asc in the birth charts of Ghandi, who died by assassination; General Schleicher, murdered by Hitler; and Helen Keller.
A conjunction with the MC has been recorded with boxer Ten Hoff and Bormann, a minister under Hitler.
A conjunction with the Sun can be found in the charts of British Prime Minister Churchill, Field-Marshall Kesselring, and the former Reichsarschall Goering.
Antares was conjunction the Moon of Copernicus, and bound up with the lunar Node and Moon of the philosopher Nietzche, who, at age 45, became an imbecile.
The Austrian Kulturphilisoph, Rudolf Kassner, was born when the fixed star was conjunction Mars. Because he contracted infantile paralysis, he had to use crutches all his life. [8]
Antares: Greek: “Similar to Ares,” namely in the red color, α Scorpionis, has, as the name already says, Mars as its fundamental force, namely the lower octave of Mars, intensified by a, albeit smaller, but nonetheless quite destructive, element of Saturn. The overall effect is therefore dangerous, especially since mitigation by Jupiter’s influence is only minimal. Those influenced by it, mostly warriors, are of great ruthlessness, but the Mercury component prevents them from indulging in senseless cruelties, and the Jupiter influence bestows a certain magnanimity. Furthermore, Mercury’s influence, especially in conjunction with Mercury, provides great mental agility and a good memory, particularly in matters relating to strategy and tactics (cf. Bellatrix). According to Morinus, if born during the day with the Sun, or at night with Saturn, it signifies the father’s strictness; if the Moon is conjunct, strict upbringing by the mother. With the Moon on the Ascendant or in the 12th house, there is also a danger to eyesight. Helen Keller, the blind writer, had vilified Antares on the Ascendant through a square with Uranus. The philosopher Nietzsche, who also suffered from eye problems and ended in mental derangement, likewise had Antares on his ascendant in conjunction with the Moon, with an unfavorable aspect to this axis due to Venus in the sixth house. Baron von Klöckler believed he had observed an aggravation of all pre-existing ailments through the influence of this star, which is quite probable, especially in the case of feverish illnesses. [9]
The prime star of Scorpio is Antares, a name meaning ‘Rival to Mars’. In the night sky, it is often more visible than Mars itself. In Babylon, it was Urbat in the asterism Hurrus, Divine Protector. The Babylonian title brings us to this star’s role as one of the four Archangel stars: Fomalhaut – Gabriel, Aldebaran – Michael, Regulus – Raphael, and now Antares – Uriel. The City of Ur, where Abraham was born, is said to have been the first city to be built after the Great Disaster and was given the name of Earth itself: Urs. That city stood close to the site of later Babylon itself, not too far from modern Baghdad. Uriel, the Archangel not mentioned in the sacred texts made available to the public, was the one who held the secret knowledge of the Great Disaster and only revealed it to those judged able to accept it and still believe in the Divine Goodness in all that befalls us. Again, this is so very Scorpio in nature that one cannot miss or deride its ring of truth.
Ptolemy classified Antares as a Mars-Jupiter type, and all astrologers have noted it as an indicator of success in war and high command therein, but not forgetting that one’s opponent may have the support of Aldebaran, the star opposite to this one, and star of Archangel Michael, commander of the Heavenly Host itself! What does tend to show up when these two stars are both engaged on the horoscope is a conflict, either the starting date of the war or the natal charts of the leaders, is that peace rarely ensues before the total and crushing defeat of one side or the other. And it is a war that escalates to huge proportions, even to a world scale, as aggressive Mars is precedence over expansive Jupiter would imply.
But war is not the only outlet for the symbolism of Antares, and it indicates just as often the individual’s great store of energy and optimism to undertake ventures that others could not attempt. According to the planets involved and the house on the horoscope where Antares is found, such ventures can include anything from sports achievements and exploration of Antarctica or the Moon to diplomacy of the most hazardous kind or scientific research at the extremes of human knowledge and ability. [10]
In classical astrology, Antares is the star of war and weaponry, and with expounded meaning, to challenge the established opposing politics (an arena common to the Antares / Aldebaran axis) with tenacious adamancy. This is especially in regard to taking a stand against the established conditions of our personal lives and against the established order or authority directing our lives when those conditions or that authority are no longer in our best interest nor supporting our evolutionary freedom and fulfillment.
However, it is only the less aware whom mistake this power point in the ecliptic to mean fight or destroy what one still perceives as forces outside of self required to combat. Antares marks a point of empowerment in sidereal Scorpio, a point of immanation. Those who have embraced their initiations and claimed their self-empowerment, who have graduated from playing victim in the entrapments common to the claws of the Scorpion, and who have learned to take responsibility for their reality, which occurs at the head of the Scorpion, this is a place of self-empowerment. Here at the Heart of the Scorpion, one claims their immanace, the inseparable nature of life, having reconciled the forces within and without, who knows of their oneness and of the inseparable permeability of the Creation Force—as is exemplified by Ophiuchus, who demonstrably stands over the Scorpion, the exemplar of this wisdom.
Either way, Antares motivates us to take responsibility for our reality, for the lives we create, and to “take a stand” for our truth and live it. Prominent alignments with the Antares-Aldebaran axis often indicate involvement in areas of politics and business. [11]
Fixed star Antares rules the right side of the third vertebra from the bottom (fifth lumbar). [12]
Constellation Xin the Heart
07♐48 to 16♐08
Those born under the Heart sign are resolute and diligent, averse to evil and promote good, unafraid of hardship, and possess a strong sense of justice; they are capable and therefore often take on more responsibility. Their weakness is their tendency to be overly suspicious, which can sometimes hinder the full expression of their talents and the development of their career.
The heart is the dragon’s heart. The heart star, also known as Antares, was called “fire,” “great fire,” or “merchant star” in ancient times. Heart represents the moon and the fox and is associated with fire. The dragon’s waist is the location of the kidneys, the source of metabolism, and should not be taken lightly; therefore, it is often considered inauspicious.
The Heart Star, an inauspicious star, is not without its dangers. Construction or other matters involving men and women will be harmful. Graves should not be buried on this day, as plague and death will occur within three years. [13]
The three stars of the Heart constellation represent the proper position of the Heavenly King. The central star is called the Bright Hall (Antares), the position of the Son of Heaven, the Great Star, which governs the rewards and punishments of the world; the star in front is the Crown Prince (σ Sco); the star behind is the commoners (τ Sco).
If the star is straight, the king loses power. If the star is bright and large, the world is united; if the world changes, the heart star is auspicious; if it moves, the army is scattered, and the people are displaced.
A solar eclipse indicates that punishments will be unjust, generals and ministers will doubt each other, the people will be hungry, and there will be war and death. A solar halo indicates that the king is worried.
A lunar eclipse in its constellation indicates that the king is displeased, the three high officials are worried, and there will be death among the people. A lunar halo indicates drought, high grain prices, insect infestation, and impending misfortune.
When it is in conjunction with the five planets, it is very ominous.
When the Moon intrudes upon it, the ministers are worried; when it intrudes upon the central and front and back stars, the king is displeased; when it appears north of the heart star, the country will be drought-stricken; when it appears south, the king is worried, and war will break out.
When Jupiter intrudes upon it, there will be celebrations, abundant grain, and the submission of the Chinese and barbarians; when its color is unclear, there will be death and drought.
When Mars intrudes upon it, the ministers are worried; when it passes through the heart, there will be famine; when it is in conjunction with Venus, there will be death. It is also said that when Mars is in the yang position, it is joy; when it is in the yin position, it is worry.
It is also said that if a planet guards Xin, it signifies a change in governance; if it violates Xin, it signifies the displacement of people and the dislike of high-ranking officials. If a planet guards to the south, it signifies floods; if it guards to the north, it signifies drought; if it moves in retrograde, it signifies chaos among high-ranking officials.
If Saturn violates Xin, high-ranking officials will rejoice, and the harvest will be plentiful; if it guards it, there will be successful land reclamation; if it stays for thirty days, there will be a pardon; if it stays for a long time, the ruler will be wise; if it violates Antares in the center, there will be fire disasters; if it moves in retrograde, it signifies female interference in politics.
If Venus violates, grain prices will be high, generals will worry, there will be floods, and a major war will occur within a year; if it leaves, its color will be unclear, signifying mourning; if it moves in retrograde and circles around Xin, high-ranking officials will dislike it.
If Mercury violates, high-ranking officials will be affected; if it is in the Yang region, it signifies Yan (a state of peace); if it is in the Yin region, it signifies the northern frontier; otherwise, there will be earthquakes and heavy rains; if it guards Xin, it signifies floods and theft.
If a guest star violates, it signifies drought; if it guards Xin, it signifies fire disasters; if it leaves, grain prices will be high, and the people will suffer famine.
If a comet violates Xin, high-ranking officials will doubt one another; if it guards it and then appears, it signifies locusts, famine, and war. The presence of a comet, in its respective aspects, signifies war, mourning, and the displacement of people.
A meteor streaking across Xin signifies a minister’s rebellion; its entry into Xin indicates the arrival of foreign envoys; its blue color signifies war and worry; yellow signifies earthworks; black signifies misfortune.
Clouds entering Xin, if yellow, indicate joy for descendants; white signifies a rebellious minister nearby; black signifies the crown prince’s guilt. [14]
When Venus and Mars clash in the Heart, bloodshed will not stop. When Saturn and Jupiter clash, or when there is a solar or lunar eclipse, it is inauspicious. A lunar halo indicates war. If Mars guards the Antares, the country will be without a ruler. When a guest star or a comet clashes, the world will be in chaos. [15]
Constellation Scorpius the Scorpion
29♏08 to 29♐51
SCORPIO. The Scorpion.
Legend. This constellation represents the scorpion that killed Orion.
Influence. Ptolemy makes the following observations: “The bright stars in the front of the body of Scorpio have an effect similar to that produced by the influence of Mars, and partly to that produced by Saturn: the three in the body itself . . . are similar to Mars and moderately to Jupiter: those in the joints of the tail are like Saturn and partly like Venus: those in the sting, like Mercury and Mars.” By the Kabalists Scorpio is associated with the Hebrew letter Oin and the 16th Tarot Trump “The Lightning-Struck Tower.” [6]
The Scorpio was the dreaded symbol of darkness in the region of the Euphrates. Comets in this region of the sky were said to portend plagues of “reptiles” (read as locusts or other insects harmful to agriculture). In Classical Scientific Astrology, the fruitful nature of Scorpio was mentioned. This attribute also applies to the constellation. The constellation of the Scorpion has been considered unlucky from earliest antiquity. [16]
By virtue of his tail armed with its powerful sting, wherewith, when conducting the Sun’s chariot through his sign, he cleaves the soil and sows seed in the furrow, the Scorpion creates natures ardent for war and active service, and a spirit which rejoices in plenteous bloodshed and in carnage more than in plunder. Why, these men spend even peace under arms: they fill the glades and scour the woods; they wage fierce warfare now against man, now against beast, and now they sell their persons to provide the spectacle of death and to perish in the arena, when, warfare in abeyance, they each find themselves foes to attack. There are those, too, who enjoy mock-fights and jousts in arms (such is their love of fighting) and devote their leisure to the study of war and every pursuit which arises from the art of war. [20]
Fixed Star Antares Conjunctions
Ascendant conjunct Antares: Riches and honor, military honor and preferment, violence, sickness, benefits seldom last. [6]
Mental alertness, strategic ability and courage to make daredevils. Unfortunate for the eyes. [8]
A splendid and illustrious life; glorious, mighty and commanding nature; fame, busy with many activities, bountiful resources, well known or feared in cities and regions. Prosperity from youth and in own city. Illustrious generals who subjugate regions and cities and peoples, govern, are inclined to act, are submissive, speak frankly, have a taste for fighting, and carry out their purposes. They are effective, virile, victorious, harm their enemies, are opulent and perhaps very rich, big-minded and ambitious, and they generally do not die a happy death; moreover, lovers of hunting, connoisseurs and owners of horses and quadrupeds. [17]
When the Scorpion uplifts the stars which shine at the end of its tail, the man then born with the blessing of the planets will enrich the world with cities and, with robes hitched up and driving a team of oxen, will trace the circuit of the walls with curved plough; else he will level the cities which have been erected and turn towns back into fields, and produce ripe corn where houses stood. Such will be his worth and such the power which is joined thereto. [20]

Sun conjunct Antares: It discerns many Honors, if the Native is carefull, and be not deceivedd by Soldiers; it does many times produce a burning Fever, or some violent act, and prejudice the right Eye. [18]
Pretended religion, insincere, honor and riches ending in disgrace and ruin, military preferment, the danger of treachery, violence committed or suffered, fevers and sickness, injuries to the right eye, violent death. [6]
Mental alertness, strategic ability and courage to make daredevils. Unfortunate for the eyes. [8]
This is a great ‘caution’ conjunction! Natives can gain high preferment, and suddenly, the rug can be pulled from them – natives from less than desirable environments can have sudden and unexpected violence either thrust upon them or they will be the perpetrators. There may be many honors, but there is the danger of violent situations to or around the native. This conjunction gives to those who deserve it. Generally, this conjunction can produce grandly liberal persons. The native can gain high honors, riches, gain preferment in writing, martial, and politics. Possible legal problems, which could be endless. [7]

Sun conjunct Antares in the Day: It signifies the father’s strictness. [9]
Sun conjunct Antares with Mars: Pestilential disease. [6]
Moon conjunct Antares: [Antares] shines with the divine light of majesty, and decrees the insignia of great power and authority. [19]
A splendid and illustrious life; great, distinguished and opulent nature. [17]
It assigns unto the Native a certain kind of Dignity, which carries along with it a kind of fear and enmity: it endangers his life by deceit of his enemies, or fall from a Horse, etc. It portends the death of his Mother or Wife, or very great sickness. [18]
Popular, broad-minded, interested in philosophy, science and metaphysics, liable to change religious opinions, influential friends, favorable for business and domestic matters, active in local affairs, great power, honor and wealth, but benefits may not prove lasting, the danger of violence, sickness, drowning or assassination. Liable to blindness or eye injuries, especially if at the same time Mars or Saturn are with Regulus. If Saturn is with Aldebaran, there is the danger of a violent death, probably by hanging; but if Mars is with Aldebaran, death by a stab, blow or fall, especially if in angles. [6]
High preferment in occult, martial, sports and matters dealing with public affairs. The native gains influential friends who will come to their assistance. The negative nativities will be more affected by self-destruction and violence. Generally, any benefits the native receives under this conjunction are not of a lasting nature; however, there is the possibility of great power, authority, and wealth. [7]

Venus conjunct Antares: Insincere, dishonest, energetic and able but selfish. [6]
Positive nativities are able, selfish and energetic. They gain friends because of their knowledge and capabilities. Negative nativities have the same traits but are subject to impulsiveness, sudden decisions, and possibly self-destruction. Both positive and negative nativities are subject to domestic and romantic problems. This conjunction can bring the native to the brink of self-destruction unless the native is strong enough to avoid and recover from disaster. Generally, they require assistance. [7]

The native is subject to being misunderstood by their friends and relatives and is subject to differences, but not of a lasting nature. Self-destruction is possible. Natives should learn not to get involved in senseless controversy. [7]
If associated with Mars, courage is said to become foolhardiness, leading to increased dangers. Natives with this particular configuration have to be prepared at all times for sudden incidents and unforeseen events, and potential accidents. [8]
This brings brutality, and the person is in a rage over many things. This individual can even feel the rage at the bottom of their spine as this energy comes up the spine, causing energized adrenal glands. They are enraged over the philosophies of society, such as the court system, religious disciplines and the government. They are enraged over any limitations, those limiting structures in the home, work, the government, religions and the military. They do not understand what their problem really is. They just know they are angered at everything. They respond to incidents that are trivial to others with chaos and aggression. They are especially destructive to those close to them, for they are the ones who receive the greatest anger. These natives are never in a calm state and will literally beat anyone down who gets in the way. They do not feel any remorse or sorrow after hurting another being; they absolutely lack compassion. If, at the same time, the Moon is with Aldebaran, the danger of death by sword or hanging. [6]
(1° orb): This planet restricts mobility, and these natives generally end up walking with a cane. Their nerves are usually shortened so that one leg is slightly shorter than the other, causing them to walk with a limp. This is painful, but the cane offers support so that the pain is bearable. They eventually have more pain due to an imbalance of the spine caused by an interrupted blood flow at that point. Taking small amounts of garlic daily would help the nerves through the area and stimulate the energy flow. Deep within themselves, these people do not like to participate in daily activities. They do not like to help others, and there is a subconscious dilemma that brings on this blockage. They like to feel they are too good or too self-righteous and above others to participate in normal day-to-day activities. These persons use their restrictions in mobility to place themselves above others. [12]

[6]
This causes spasms through the sciatic nerve and down through part of the thigh. It is not painful, but it is unstable, as the person will shake slightly when they try to put weight on that side. Hops would be of great help and should be taken three times per week in an herb tea such as chamomile, which would relax the muscles. [12]
