Fixed star Zubenelgenubi, Alpha Librae, is a 2.7 magnitude pale yellow and light gray double star in the Southern Scale of the Balance, Libra Constellation. The traditional name Zubenelgenubi, or  Zuben Elgenubi, is from the Arabic ّالزُبَانَى الجَنُوبِي (al-zubānā al-janūbiyy} which means the southern claw. Before the Scales were made separate constellation, it formed the claws of Scorpio Constellation. Another name is Kiffa Australis, a partial Latin translation of the Arabic al-kiffah al-janūbiyy, meaning southern pan.

Symbolically called the Insufficient Price. Of the nature of Saturn and Mars, it causes malevolence, obstruction, an unforgiving character, violence, disease, lying, crime, disgrace, and danger of poison. [1]

The Southern Scales is a double star. Its brighter partner is of Mars character with a weak blend of Saturn. The unhelpful influence of this star is said to be noticeable, especially in natives who were born during the night. A bad omen for health of the native is given if Sun or Moon is in conjunction with the Southern Scales. It has been noted that it is particularly disadvantageous to have Saturn or Neptune tied up with this star. Even the conjunction with Jupiter is credited as being adverse. Vehlow has recorded “confiscation of possessions during times of war’. A credit given to the Southern and Northern Scales is that they both bestow an immortal name. However, this comes about more by tragic circumstances than by well noted success. [2]

South Scale was classified by Ptolemy as a Jupiter-Mars star, not unfitting for the prime star in the Sign which has so much to do with justice, whose feminine personification on the dome of London’s ‘Old Bailey’ court is a lady with the scales of Libra in one hand, and the martian sword in the other. Jupiter is fair and merciful, even though he must point a sword to the guilty, beneficent to the plaintiff who has been wronged.

Not that human judges always measure up to that high ideal, and that means all of us in our judgement of others, not just those paid for the job. South Scale as an astrological feature contains all of that allegory: well aspected and on the ‘right’ planet in a horoscope, we have someone of courage to fight for right, but generosity to his opponents when they are defeated. If harshly aspected, especially to Mars, Saturn or Moon, justice may well take a back seat to vengeance. Such a person does well not to get into any kind of job where he can use his power, for surely he will himself live to regret it in public dishonor or worse.

It is well to remember here the other association of this star with a scorpion’s claw, used for making love as well as for slaying its prey. It does not let go until one or other matter is complete, and onlookers are not sure which of the two acts is actually in process. Sometimes even the Scorpion seems to get it wrong along the way! Humans engaged in relationship with others, marital, judicious or whatever, need to keep very clear head and hearts if this star is strong with them. It frequently shows up ill-aspected in many unfortunate situations, from domestic strife and miscarriages of justice, to psychopathic killings that started out in the guise of love. But again, its appearance in better aspect is often just the right moment to repair a relationship and to reconsider an earlier harsh judgment. [3]

Zubeneschamali, or the Northern Scale, is considered a very fruitful star. The Chaldeans believed that when this star was clear the crops would be good. In genethiacal charts this star gives riches, honor, and good fortune. Classical astrologers believed the same concerning the Southern Scale, Zubenelgenubi, but to a lesser degree corresponding to the difference in influence between Jupiter and Venus. Modern astrologers, however, assert just the opposite, claiming ruin and disgrace and even violence in connection with the Southern Scale. [4]

Zubenelgenubi rules the lower half of the colon in the human body. [5]

Zubenelgenubi Star Conjunctions

Ascendant conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Could mean rise in fortunes, followed by a downfall. There is also an indication of danger coming about in connection with water. [2]

Sun conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Sickness, loss in business and through fire or speculation, disgrace, ruin, disfavor of superiors, suffers through wrongful accusations, sickness to family. [1]

Moon conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Trouble through opposite sex, wrongful accusations, disgrace, ruin, mental anxiety, loss of relatives, many disappointments, much sickness, disease in those parts of the body ruled by the sign. [1]

Mercury conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Crafty, revengeful, treacherous, quick mind, bad health, disgrace, poverty at end of life. [1]

This position affects the lower colon by causing a thin film to cover the inside of the colon. The result is a lack of absorption and a stagnation in this area clogging the inside walls of the colon. Stimulation is required to increase the flow, and these natives resort to laxatives to release the waste in the system. Instead of laxatives, these individuals need to drink papaya juice and raspberry tea continuously. [5]

Venus conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Bad for marriage, sudden and secret death, may be poisoned owing to jealousy of one of own sex. [1]

Mars conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Bitter quarrels, entailing bloodshed or death. [1]

This is a drying process of the tissues in the colon, thereby causing cracks in the walls of the colon. Mint teas and a teaspoon of olive oil three times per week would be very helpful here. These natives find it difficult to relieve their bowels which causes hemorrhoid problems. The external use of Vaseline would also be quite helpful. [5]

Jupiter conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Hypocrisy, deceit, dishonesty, pretended religious zeal for business purposes, danger of imprisonment. [1]

Saturn conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Dishonorable, often escapes justice but finally suffers, jealous, quick-tempered, domestic disharmony, bad for marriage, gain and legacies. [1]

Uranus conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Sharp, cunning, dangerous, abnormal mind, thought reader, always injuring others, may commit undiscovered crime, violent passions but great control, secret revenge, latter part of life in asylum or prison, violent death. [1]

Neptune conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Morose, melancholy, isolated, shrewd, cunning, evil use of occult powers and of poisons or drugs, cynical, dangerous, broods over some secret, peculiar death, often suicide. [1]

Part of Fortune conjunct Zubenelgenubi: Loss by thieves, soldiers, servants, gambling, speculation, fire and lawsuits. [1]

  1. What would be interesting is to see what some of the stars say about the south node. It might help gives us some indications from where we left off in our past lives! Maybe even the north node too.

    • I have thought this but I struggle with the meaning of South versus North Node, especially considering Vedic astrology say the South Node is favorable and the North not so.

      • I’ll have to read about the Vedic Perspective of the nodes. My natal Venus is conjunct the South Node of a guy I really like, with a tight orb of 0.05 degrees. And it’s conjunct quite a nice start, too – Alkes in Virgo. I think it could be promising.

  2. I’ve made friends with someone this year who has this star conjunct his Sun. He’s suffered with wrongful accusations quite a lot. And the malevolence and lying seem to happen around him – towards him. I was also say yes to ruin and disfavour from superiors. Hi sister suffered from sickness her whole life and died at 16 – so there’s the sickness to family, to point out the evidence to the star. It seems like quite an unlucky star. This isn’t about the guy I wrote about above a little while back. I’m not interested in him anymore, I’ve changed my mind. He’s was way too arrogant. This guy with this star I feel really sorry for, with what he’s been through in his life. Just trying to be there for him. Anyway, going on. Thinking too much.

    • It amazing how different the North and South Scales are, totally opposite really. I have seen this reflected in charts so many times, without fail really.

      • Yes, it’s unusual. I haven’t known this person that long yet, so maybe he lies or/and is malevolent. It could be a possibility as it comes with the star. I’m falling into that typical Neptunian saviour-savee syndrome. I meet someone with a hard luck story and start feeling sorry for them!

        • My intuition has been telling me that this person I made friends with recently is a lying and disgraceful person. I felt sorry for him and just wanted to help him. We can’t go round feeling sorry for everyone. To be honest, he is disgraceful. I won’t list all the reasons on here, as it won’t be nice to put it all on your website. He’s quite unkept, scruffy, eats meat with his hands (like a Neanderthal), dirty fingernails, has hair coming out of his nostrils and his life has gone to ruin since his teens. I think that sympathy can be like a dangerous smoke screen. There was absolutely no attraction to this person; only the need to feel like helping him. Maybe this star is his destiny and he’s being punished from his past life. The stars and planets don’t lie; they’re like evidence. Snapshots with a camera of an individuals life and personality. Although I think that every characteristic of a star may not fill the description of the person. Parts or most of the stars description can be spot on. Exact to a T. I’ve done a lot of research – marrying up friends and families planets and sun to the constellations stars, and there really is a lot of truth/evidence there.

          • I have found that the more I learn about these stars the more I trust Robson’s interpretations. The words may seen a bit extreme at first and people usually react with hostility at first reading some of the descriptions. But I nearly always find they are right even if in subtle ways.

            • Yes, they are. Especially if the person makes sure that the star is in orb with their sun. I didn’t find that Algorab conjunct Mercury described me, but all the other planet/star conjunctions describe me – and planetary aspects. The descriptions actually describe things about people that you didn’t put into words first and then you’re like; “yes, that’s definitely what they’re like!” The stars could even be a warning to what people are like – the people we don’t know or haven’t known for long. Traits such as lying for example.
