The 15th Chinese lunar mansion is named 奎宿 Kui Su, “Legs Mansion.” It is the first of the seven mansions of the White Tiger of the West.
The first asterism of the Legs Mansion is also named 奎 Kui, “Legs.” It is composed of 16 stars in the constellations Andromeda and Pisces, and has been variously described as shaped like ”two thighs,” like ”a pig,” a “four-legged Fish Palace,” or “slender-waisted and pointed-headed like a worn-out shoe.”

The sixteen stars of the Kui constellation, the celestial arsenal, also called the Heavenly Pig or the Sealed Pig, govern the use of force to suppress violence and also govern ditches and canals. The Kui constellation (奎宿) is closely associated with Kui Xing (魁星), the deity of the imperial examination system that originated in the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279). Its image resembles a ghost with red hair and bulging eyes, holding a writing brush in its right hand and standing on the head of a dragon, symbolizing “standing out from the crowd.” Kui Xing is also associated with the first four stars of the Big Dipper.
Kui Xing used a vermilion brush to mark the names of candidates, and those who achieved the highest rank were called “Duo Kui.” Scholars worshipped Kui Xing to seek good fortune in examinations, and during the Ming and Qing dynasties, Kui Xing Pavilions and Kui Xing Towers were built in various locations.
