Fixed Star Megrez

Ursa Major Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Megrez on August 24

Fixed star Megrez, Delta Ursae Majoris (δ UMa), is a 3rd-magnitude single star in the Tail of the Big Bear, Ursa Major constellation. It is the faintest star of the Big Dipper and connects the bowl to the handle.
Magnitude 3.31, spectral type A3V, color white or blue-white.
Megrez has two faint companions: a 10th-magnitude star and an 11th-magnitude star. [1]

δ UMa is officially named Megrez.
Applied in recent times from an abbreviation of its modern Arabic name maghriz al-dubb al-akbar, “the Root (of the tail) of the Greater Bear.” [2]

δ, 3.6, pale yellow.
Megrez is from Al Meghrez, “the Root of the Tail.”
In China, it was Kwan, and Tien Kuen, “Heavenly Authority.”
With the Hindus, it may have been Atri, one of their Seven Rishis, and the Vishṇu-Dharma said that it ruled the other stars of the Bear.
Megrez is thought to be slightly variable, and to have decreased in lustre during the present century, on the very doubtful ground that it is much fainter than the succeeding ε. As to this Miss Clerke writes:
The immemorially observed constituents of the Plough preserve no fixed order of relative brilliancy, now one, now another of the septett having at sundry epochs assumed the primacy.
But this is uncertain, although we know that Ptolemy rated it at the 3d magnitude and Tycho at the 2d. [3]

In Chinese astronomy, δ UMa is located in the asterism 北斗 Běidǒu, “Northern Dipper,” and is known by the following traditional names:
北斗四 Běidǒusì, “4th star of Northern Dipper.”
      天權 Tiānquán, “The Celestial Balance.”
      權星 Quánxīng, “Star of authority.”
      文曲星 Wénqūxīng, “Star of wrong-writing.”
      伐星 Fáxīng, “Cutting-down star.”
      天辅 Tiānfǔ, “Celestial assistant.”
      玄冥 Xuánmíng, “The mysterious underworld.”
玄武 Xuánwǔ, “God of the north sky.”
真武 Zhēnwǔ, “Lord of profound heaven.”
      六煞 Liùshà, “Six friends.” [4]

The Saptarishi, or Seven Sages of Hinduism, are revered seers who embody divine wisdom and cosmic order. Represented in the constellation Ursa Major, they guide humanity through spiritual knowledge and Vedic teachings.
δ UMa represents Atri Rishi, the seer of divine balance. He is one of the most ancient Vedic sages and a Manas-putra (mind-born son) of Lord Brahma. Atri embodies purity and spiritual discipline and is revered for his wisdom and for composing hymns in the Rig Veda. [5]

Megrez Astrology

The spectral class A2 indicates that Mizar has a Venus-like nature.

The Academic Star

In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Megrez is the fourth star of Běidǒu, the “Northern Dipper” asterism, within the Zǐ wēi yuán, “Purple Forbidden Enclosure.” It is known as Tiānquán, “The Celestial Balance,” and Wénqūxīng, “Star of wrong-writing,” but is most commonly referred to as Wen Qu.
Megrez is particularly beneficial for academic advancement, examinations, and the development of cultural and educational undertakings. Megrez represents grass and the common people and is also auspicious for official appointments, long journeys, construction, relocation, marriage, burial, and entertaining, bringing joy, wealth, prosperity, and lasting blessings in all endeavors. [6]
In ancient China, Megrez was associated with the attainment of scholarly status through the imperial examinations. In Chinese astrology, Megrez is a lucky star that governs writing, literature, academic success and fame, literary fortune, divination, officialdom, and official achievements.
Megrez in your natal chart indicates elegance, refined taste, uprightness, eloquence, and refined talent, especially in literature and art, or a love of literature and art. Well-aspected or conjunct a benefic indicates intelligence and greatly benefits examinations.
Megrez represents the Yin aspect of feeling and imitation more than the Yang aspect of replication or printing. Megrez symbolizes intelligence and talent, with a focus on artistic pursuits such as poetry, calligraphy, painting, music, and chess, reflecting a richer, more sensual appreciation of life that relies on aesthetics to gain worldwide recognition.
Megrez is less adept at more rational and practical academic pursuits, such as literary achievements, institutional systems, and written contracts, or at the imperial examination, which relied on memory rather than emotion.
Megrez still possesses excellent memory abilities, but this excellence is applied to the memory of feelings, moreso than tangible texts and images. Furthermore, because Megrez readily recalls situations and feelings, it is prone to being moved by what it sees, resulting in a tendency to feign melancholy and appear overly sentimental.
Megrez can be regarded as a compressed memory storage system that can hold many files and be accessed and released freely. If well-aspected or conjunct a benefic, its storage function is super strong, and the storage and release are uninterrupted. However, when harshly aspected or conjunct a malefic, the channel is blocked; capacity is chaotic and disorganized; and it is difficult to store and use information effectively.
Because of their love of learning, Megrez is particularly sensitive to academic matters, with a greater willingness and interest in academic pursuits related to cultivating one’s temperament and character. Megrez demonstrates extensive knowledge, a strong memory, and resourcefulness. The academic knowledge it absorbs and stores is broad and diverse, but it can be released and used in a timely manner.
Megrez also carries the connotation of romance. If a woman’s horoscope also contains a planet conjunct Merak, she is prone to moral decay and promiscuity. If it also contains a planet conjunct Mizar, she is likely to be learned and versatile. [7]

The Big Dipper

The Big Dipper

Ursa Major Constellation

URSA MAJOR. The Greater Bear.
Legend.   Callisto, daughter of Lycaon, king of Arcadia, of whom Jupiter was enamored, became a follower of Diana on account of her love of hunting. Jupiter sought Callisto by assuming the form of Diana, and Juno  who discovered the intrigue turned Callisto into a bear. Angry that the bear was placed in heaven, Juno requested her brother Neptune never to let those stars set within his kingdom, and for this reason they are always above the horizon in Europe. To account for the length of the bear’s tail [because in reality bears don’t have tails], it is said that Jupiter, fearing her teeth, lifted her by the tail, which became stretched because of her weight and the distance from earth to heaven.
Influence.   According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. It is said to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump “The Chariot.”
Magical.   Gives craft, ingenuity and valor. [8]

Astrologically both Bears were said to presage an evil influence. They are particularly injurious as regards to the affairs of nations and kings. [9]
