Fixed Star Rukbat

Sagittarius Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Rukbat on January 7

Alpha Sagittarii, Rukbat, is a blue, 3.97 magnitude star on the left knee of the Archer, constellation Sagittarius.

Alpha Sagittarii has been called Rukbat and Alrami, from the Arabic Rukbat al Rami, meaning “the Knee of the Archer.” Delta Cassiopeiae was also called Ruchbah or Rukbat, from the Arabic ركبة Rukbah, meaning “Knee.” Officially, Alpha Sagittarii is now called Rukbat, and Delta Cassiopeiae is Ruchbah.

Alpha stars are usually the brightest of a constellation. But Rukbat is the 16th brightest star in Sagittarius. It is unclear why the astronomer Johann Bayer designated this star as Alpha in 1603. But it was one of the “30 Brilliant and Illustrious Stars” of Anonymous from the year 379. [1] Also, the ancient Chaldean title was Nibat Anu, probably meaning “Chief Star.” [2] So perhaps it was much brighter many years ago.

If culminating, honor and preferment. [3] The spectral class of Rukbat is B8, which indicates a Jupiter nature. [4]
