Fixed Star Algenib

Pegasus Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Algenib on March 29

Fixed star Algenib, Gamma Pegasi (γ Peg), is a 3rd magnitude single star on the tip of the wing of the Winged Horse, Pegasus constellation.
Magnitude (variable) 2.84 (2.78 – 2.89), spectral type B2IV, color blue-white. γ Peg is a Beta Cephei variable, exhibiting small rapid variations in its brightness due to pulsations of the star’s surface. It is also a slow spinner, with a projected rotational velocity of 0. This means that either the velocity is too low to be measured, which would be unusual for a hot class B star, or the star is seen almost pole-on. [1]

Gamma Pegasi (γ Peg) is traditionally and officially named Algenib.
From the modern Arabic al-janb, “the Side,” for α Per. Wrongly transferred to γ Peg in Renaissance times. [2]

γ, 3, white,
erroneously placed by Tycho in Pisces, marks the extreme tip of the Horse’s wing, so that its name Algenib has been considered as derived from Al Janāḥ, “the Wing,” but it probably is from Al Janb, “the Side.” It has sometimes been written Algemo. Al Bīrūnī quoted it, with δ (α Andromedae), as Al Fargh al Thānī, “the Second, or Lower, Spout,” i.e. of the Bucket. This also is the title of the 25th manzil, but appears in Professor Whitney’s list as Al Fargh al Mu᾽ḥir, “the Rear Spout,” and in Smyth’s as Al Fargu.
Chrysococca called it Πήγασος from the constellation.
Reeves said that it is the Chinese Peih, a Wall or Partition, thus taking the title of the 25th sieu, which it marked and, with δ, constituted. It lies at the junction of the nakshatras Bhādrapadā and Revatī; and, with δ, was included in the corresponding lunar station of several other nations. [3]

In Chinese astronomy, γ Peg is named 壁宿一 (Bi Su Yi), “Wall Constellation One,” or “the first star that forms the city wall.” It belongs to the 1st asterism of the 14th Chinese Lunar Mansion Bi (Wall). [4]

Great Square of Pegasus

Great Square of Pegasus

Algenib is one of the four bright stars that form the Great Square of Pegasus, an asterism that takes up much of the eastern portion of the Pegasus constellation. The other three stars that mark the vertices of the Great Square are Scheat (β Peg), Markab (α Peg) and Alpheratz (α And).

Algenib Astrology

Fixed star Algenib has a spectral type of B2, indicating the planetary nature of Jupiter.

SPECTRAL CLASS B:   Fondness for power, great authority, the ability to command, martial honors, kingly preferment, victory over enemies, liberality, and cosmopolitan views. High honors, wealth, and renown are possible. It also suggests a higher spiritual nature, but few can respond. A variable star adds a tendency to be loquacious, changeable, rash, and headstrong. [5]

Jupiter:   If rising, sober, grave, patient, legacies, ecclesiastical preferment. If culminating, honor, glory, preferment, success in trade and in the Church. [6]

Alpheratz (Alpha Andromedae), Caph (Beta Cassiopeiae) and Algenib (Gamma Pegasi) are together known as the Three Guides that mark the prime meridian of the heavens. It was believed to bless those born under its influence with honor and riches. [3]

ALGENIB. γ Pegasi.
Notes.   A white star situated at the tip of the wing on Pegasus. From Al Janah, the Wing, or Al Janb, the Side. According to Bullinger it means “Who Carries.”
Influence.   Of the nature of Mars and Mercury. It gives notoriety, dishonor, violence, and misfortune and denotes the naked and poor professional beggar. [6]

ALGENIB. γ Pegasi.
A small white star at the wing tip of Pegasi. “The Wing.” Spectral class B2.
BASIC INFLUENCES:   The native has a sharp, decisive mind, appears enthusiastic, and can be combative, obstinate, and ruined by headstrong conduct. Natives with this conjunction can expect some sort of notoriety, misfortune and, in negative nativities, violence. There is the possibility of them being a ward of society or reducing themselves to poverty and possibly some misfortune. [5]

Algenib II: Æ Arabic: “side” here in the sense of “wing”, namely of Pegasus, γ Pegasi, Mars – Mercury -Nature. The mercurial force is strong and highly spiritual and activated by the simultaneously present Martian force, that the star will often prove effective in inventors’ horoscopes, especially of the Age of Aquarius: Thus, it is in conjunction with Mercury and in trine to Uranus, (in Leo and in the 10th house) in the horoscope of Marconia. [7]

Algenib, Alpha Pegasi.

Algenib, in the Wing on the Side of Pegasus, is supposed to have a Mars-Mercury nature. Therefore, it brings about a penetrating mind, a strong will, determination, an impressive way of speaking, and a gift for oratory. A conjunction with the Sun creates a fighting spirit and a love of learning. Connected with Mercury, Venus and Jupiter, one can count popularity, interest in art and literature, and distinction if further configurations also point to similar gifts. With Saturn, in general, is thought of as an impeding factor but has a name for good memory according to Morin. If angular with Mercury and Uranus, Algenib will make for an inventive spirit.
The conjunction of the fixed star with the MC is found with the former minister of propaganda, ready-witted speaker Josef Goebbels. The conjunction with Mercury is significant in the Italian physicist Marconi (2°03′), and the conjunction with Venus in the popular tenor Gegli. [8]

Algenib is of the nature of Jupiter (spectral type B2) and, as such, has a good reputation. However, poorly placed with the Sun, there will be an excess of heat, resulting in violence and perhaps misfortune or dishonor. [9]

Similar to Scheat and Markab is Algenib, another Mars-Mercury, its name, pronounced Al Zhaynib, meaning The Side (of the horse). It’s placing in Aries since 754 years ago now gives it extra impetus for better or worse. It shows something of that kind of Master who feels perhaps that the old-style secrecy in which his fellows used to surround themselves should now give place to a more open attitude, at least to such of the laity as show a willingness to learn and listen. [10]

Fixed star Algenib rules the bottom portion of the skull between the nose and the upper lip. [11]

Asterism Bi the Wall

09♈09 to 14♈19

The 14th Chinese lunar mansion and its 1st asterism are both named Bi (Wall). It symbolizes the celestial library and treasury and governs literature, knowledge, the compilation and editing of secret documents, calligraphy, painting, earthworks and construction. [12]

Bi the Wall is an auspicious asterism bringing good fortune to rituals, sacrifices and construction projects. It is favorable for longevity, marriage, building cities, buying clothes and accumulating wealth. Building or installing doors on this day will bring wealth within three to seven days. However, traveling south is not advisable. [4]

The Wall Personality

The Wall asterism gives kindness, compassion, optimism, generosity, meticulous thought, a tendency to prioritize feeling over logic and theory, thorough handling of affairs, a sense of justice, an appreciation for art and beauty, and a willingness to help others. It makes people calm, introverted and trustworthy, with the ability to quickly recover from setbacks. However, it also leads to stubbornness, aloofness, poor interpersonal skills, gossip and trouble, with a tendency to be easily misunderstood and easily manipulated. [4]

This person is destined to receive the king’s favor. They are careful and frugal in their dealings with their family and in romantic relationships. They are good at making offerings to gods and Buddhas and are generous in giving alms. They are not particularly fond of studying Buddhist scriptures. [13]

Song History (1346)

The two stars of the Bi (Wall) Mansion govern literature and serve as the repository for the realm’s secret texts and records. When they shine brightly and large, a virtuous ruler rises, moral teachings prevail, and the nation abounds with men of noble character. If the stars lose their luster or vary abnormally in size, the ruler favors martial pursuits over classical scholarship, and the study of texts falls into neglect; if the stars stir or shift, major construction projects involving earthworks are imminent.

A solar eclipse in the Bi Mansion signifies the waning of yang and the rise of yin; it portends harm to the populace and a failure to employ talented men. A solar halo brings anxiety to eminent scholars.

A lunar eclipse causes distress among high officials, sidelines men of letters, and brings epidemics to the people. A lunar halo heralds wind and floods, and brings misfortune to the region associated with the mansion.

If the Moon encroaches upon it, the state faces trouble—specifically famine—and military conflict arises in the territory of Wei.

If Mercury encroaches, the state will focus on stockpiling and defense, and the ruler will enforce penal laws strictly; if it lingers, close ministers will face anxiety—interpretations include: a death or military conflict in the region; treacherous ministers plotting; or, if it lingers while in retrograde motion, bridges becoming impassable.

If Venus encroaches upon it by one or two cun [one cun = one finger’s width], the feudal lords will obey orders; if it lingers there, civil and military measures will be employed in tandem—interpretations include: an army exists but does not engage in battle; deaths occur involving the military; floods and heavy wind and rain; or frequent fires.

If Mars encroaches upon it, the territory of Wei faces trouble; if it lingers there, the state suffers drought, and the people go hungry, while the virtuous go unemployed; another interpretation holds that the King faces a major calamity.

If Jupiter encroaches upon it, water damages the five grains; if it lingers or encroaches and forms a gou-si (hook-like) pattern [stations retrograde or direct], war breaks out.

If Saturn encroaches upon or lingers at the position, state records and maps flourish, the King enjoys longevity, the realm sees abundant harvests, and the virtuous are employed; another interpretation holds that crops fail and the people suffer widespread illness; if it moves in retrograde to form a gou-si pattern [stations retrograde or direct], major earthworks are undertaken, and within sixty days, a new king ascends to the throne.

If a guest star encroaches, scholars and writers will die, or there will be mourning or casualties; if it enters, it signifies earthworks and flooding; if it lingers, the year will see much wind and rain; if it stations there, many cattle and horses will die.

If a comet encroaches, it signifies warfare and fire, or alternatively, great floods and the displacement of the populace.

If a bei star (a type of broom star or hazy comet) encroaches, it signifies warfare, fire, and floods.

If a meteor encroaches, literary pursuits will fall into neglect; however, the Yi-si Zhan states: “If the color is yellow-white, scholars and writers across the realm will be employed.”

If red cloud-vapor enters it, it signifies warfare; if black, the state beneath it will fall; if yellow, foreign states will offer tribute, or a hero of great mettle will rise in the realm. [14]

Constellation Pegasus the Winged Horse

23♒53 to 15♈22

PEGASUS.   The Flying Horse.
Legend.   Pegasus was born from the blood of Medusa after Perseus had cut off her head, and was afterwards tamed and ridden by Bellerophon. Being weary of earthly affairs Bellerophon attempted to fly to heaven but fell off, and Pegasus continued his course, entered heaven and took his place among the stars.
Influence.   According to Ptolemy the bright stars are like Mars and Mercury. The constellation gives ambition, vanity, intuition, enthusiasm, caprice and bad judgment.
Magical.   Prevails against diseases of horses and preserves horsemen in battle. [6]

The constellation portends events concerning ships and the ocean and also changes in the weather. In medieval times it was said to indicate vain individuals with a great deal of ambition but very poor judgment. [9]

Like birds, angels, and most celestial winged creatures, Pegasus is an allegory for the superior spiritual power that the hero first sought to aid him in his task, and the Owl represents the wisdom side of that same power. [10]

In mundane astrology, Pegasus is associated with drowning, accidents, catastrophes, earthquakes, tsunamis, storms, floods, shipwrecks, mining accidents, airplane accidents, falling accidents, shooting down from high, horses, jockeys, transportation, communications, space travel, exploration, pioneering, science, invention and heroism.

They can, however, be subjected to periods of being depressed or simply being melancholy, and this might not be evident unless the native is under a strain. This will be more obvious if Neptune is adversely aspected in the natal chart. At times, such natives will seek complete privacy, which should not be mistaken for being a loner or a private person.  Emotional strains will take their toll on such natives. Natives with this conjunction can readily develop a tendency towards being hypocritical, even becoming quite sarcastic in their responses. These natives,  while not outwardly appearing so, will be emotionally tense, accident-prone, and desire to continually push forward towards their objective. After they reach their goal(s), they will either not want it or be unable to determine precisely what they want to do. The native can be combative, quite decisive, and enthusiastic. [5]

(+) Natives with this conjunction are mentally quick and active. This does not necessarily indicate a high order of intelligence, nor a lack of intelligence, but the ready reply to questions that others would take time out to think the answers to a conclusion. These natives can acquire the ability to become leaders and be very active in whatever careers they choose to follow. Impulsive actions are possible. [5]

(–) These natives are mentally keen, but unless they have been carefully trained at an early age, they can develop into ‘con’ persons, swindlers, or in other ways become dishonest. In some cases lying would be second nature to such natives. There is also a danger of turbulent actions to or by the natives with this conjunction. Natives’ judgment is open to question. [5]

This causes hot flashes around the head and face. These persons sometimes feel the heat on the lips through blisters, rashes and sores. Surgery to the gums is certain but would not solve the problem as the problem would be enhanced at a later time through the development of gum disease. [11]

This affects the nervous system through the bottom of the skull to the brain and the nerves in the front of the face. There would be pain and numbness under the nose and upper teeth, which would also be very sensitive. The person would feel they need a dentist due to aching of the upper teeth and an irritation and burning sensation in the inner part of the ears. The nerve centers would be very sensitive, but the specific area could not be pinpointed. Although the sensitivity would not be constant, it would be noticed when the individual is under stress. 1. I think this is conjunct my Moon at 10’09 Aries. Does the MR and square (and part of a t-Square including Pluto!) to Mars in Cancer mean I should consider this star conjunct Mars also? Thank you Jamie! (BD: Sept 7, 1979 11:44pm Colorado Springs, CO, USA)

    • Algenib was 08°52′ Aries when you were born so well within orb of your Moon. I don’t see a link to your Mars and anyway, only conjunctions are used in fixed stars astrology. The link I do see to your Moon is quincunx Mercury on fixed star Zosma. This could suggest some health issues regarding negative thinking, depression or anxiety perhaps.

      • Okay, Thank you Jamie! The quincunx aspect is the tightest in my chart, minus the fixed stars. I am in the negative thinking/depression and anxiety phase now, sadly, but will continue working on easing those. In the Zosma article, Ptolemy likens to Saturn-Venus, which my chart supports. Saturn is tightly holding on to Venus, and on the other side, the Sun. Will do more studying, and try some chamomile tea! Thank you again!

  2. My 11th house Mars is in an opposition to Algenib by ’43. I’d truly appreciate your opinion on that. Thank you Jamie, all the best!

    • Only conjunction aspects are used with fixed star Essam. See the stars around 10 degree Libra which will be close to your Mars: Vindemiatrix and Porrima.

  3. Hi Jamie I have it conjunct to Chiron exact I’m the first house . Any thoughts? Thanks

  4. one of my favorite artists is Van Gogh who has his Sun in Aries on this star. The Sun is exalted in Aries and shows how Van Gogh loved the color yellow. He also enjoyed painting in the sunshine. however, his Sun had no major aspect to other planets leaving him at the mercy of the sun’s blinding rays. Vincent was notorious, misfortunate and poor and suffered ill health.
I would not assign him to a psychotic mentality without accurate diagnosis. However he was known to be violent at times. A wonderful painter.

  5. Jamie, I had to tell you for the sake of research!

My mother was diagnosed with a very rare benign brain tumor at the left base of her skull. She went in for a scan of her left shoulder and the scan just happened to get part of the tumor. After much testing, they found out that her shoulder pain, raspy voice, and brain tumor were all connected. Her tumor paralyzed one of her vocal cords and the nerve happens to run from the brain through her vocal cords to her left shoulder. Her doctors said that it has been there for a long time and is very slow growing. So she asked me to look in her chart to see if I could tell how long she’s had it.

I immediately looked to the fixed stars on your site, the very first one I clicked on was this star. Her mercury (vocal chords/speech/mind) is within 10 seconds orb conjunction this star with Jupiter (growth) square the conjunction. I was able to see in her transits exactly when it began growing, in 1987, she was 15. Luckily the doctors say she will most likely be fine after vocal chord surgery, as the tumor is growing so slowly.

Saturn conjunct Algenib: This causes difficulties through growth patterns in the skull such as a calcium growth. The larger the growth, the more difficulties the person would experience in their daily functions such as dizziness and extreme pains in the head.

Turns out her tumor is a benign, inoperable, very slow growing calcium growth!

Astrology still amazes me! Thank you for having this database of fixed stars, I use it all the time.
