Fixed star Sirius, Alpha Canis Majoris, is a brilliant white and yellow star, the brightest star in the sky. It is positioned in the neck of Canis Major, the Greater Dog. Apparent magnitude −1.46. Spectral type A0mA1 V.

The naming of the fixed star Sirius, the Dog-star, derives from the Greek Σείριος Seirios (Sparking, Scorching). In Egypt it was Sothis, and is depicted with Jupiter in the Dendera Zodiac, as Jupiter was conjunct Sirius during the solar eclipse of 51 BC, the day that Cleopatra’s father died. The ancient Egyptian calendar was based on lunar cycles of around 30 days and on the helical rising of the fixed star Sirius.

Sirius Astrology

Sirius is of the nature of Jupiter and Mars. It gives honor, renown, wealth, ardor, faithfulness, devotion, passion and resentment, and makes its natives custodians, curators and guardians. It also gives danger of dog bites, and two examples of this effect will be found under Procyon. [1]

α Canis Majoris. A binary, white and yellow star. The main star belongs to spectral class A l. It has a companion star, Sirius ‘B,’ a white dwarf star that rotates around the main star every 50 years. This is a dwarf star having 90,000 times the density of our Sun. Sirius has twice the diameter of our Sun and is 9 light years distant.

The native is ambitious, loves to exercise ‘power,’ and has a grandeur of outlook. Good for business prosperity, custodial guardian, honors, wealth, and renown. Native receives favors from superiors and friends. Questionable writings, speeches, and statements could bring latent honors. Sirius (our English “Sir” is derived from this word) was, by the ancients, always associated with great heat. And the hottest part of the year we still call “the dog days,” though, through the variation as observed in different latitudes, and the precession of the equinoxes, its rising has long ceased to have any relation to those days. Virgil says that Sirius “With pestilential heat infects the sky.”

Homer spoke of it as a star “Whose burning breath, Taints the red air with fevers, plagues, and death.” It is not, however, of its heat that its name speaks, but of the fact that it is the brightest of all the stars, as He of whom it witnesses is the “Prince of princes,” “the Prince of the Kings of the earth.”

Though this “Dog-Star” came to have an ill-omened association, it was not so in more ancient times. In the ancient Akkadian it is called Kasista, which means the Leader and Prince of the heavenly host. While (as Mr. Robert Brown, Jr, points out) “the Sacred Books of Persia contain many praises for the star Tistrya or Tistar (Sirius), ‘the chieftain of the East.'” (Euphratean Stellar Researches).   Sirius is one of the 15 Behenian Fixed Stars. Its image is a hound or a little virgin. It gives honor, the goodwill and favor of men and the airy spirits, and the power to pacify nobles and others. Rules beryl, savine, mugwort, dragonwort and the tongue of a snake. [1]

Constellation Canis Major

Ptolemy states that the stars of this constellation, with the exception of Sirius, are like Venus. It is said to give good qualities, charity and a faithful heart, but violent and dangerous passions. There is some danger from, or fear of, darkness and the night, and liability to dog bites, though the latter characteristic is probably associated more particularly with Sirius. Canis Major is connected by the Kabalists with the Hebrew letter Tzaddi and the 18th Tarot Trump, “The Moon”. [1]
