The stars with which the new moon most closely aligns in the Ram are 35 and 41 Arietis. They belong to a group of four small stars that Ptolemy described in his Algemest (150 A.D.) as lying ‘over the rump’ of Aries. ^[2] They belonged to the obsolete Constellation of the Northern Fly for a time.

39 Arietis is named Lili Borea, meaning the Northern Lily. It belonged to the obsolete constellation of Lilium (the Lily), representing the fleur-de-lis and in honor of King Louis XIV. But these four relatively insignificant stars on the rump of the Ram have a colorful history:

• In 1612, the constellation was originally called Apes (bee).
• In 1624, it was renamed Vespa (wasp).
• In 1679, it was renamed Lilium (fleur-de-lis).
• In 1690, it was renamed Musca (fly).
• In 1922, the four stars were returned to Constellation Aries.

This obsolete constellation is now called Musca Borealis (the Northern Fly) to differentiate it from Musca Australis (the Southern Fly), officially named Musca.

The names for 33, 35 and 41 Arietis are derived from the Hindu (भरणी bharaṇī, “the bearer.” They make up the second nakshatra, or lunar mansion, in Vedic astronomy. Bharani is ruled by Venus and is associated with nurturing, adapting, passion, desire, jealousy, sacrifice, fear, and taking extreme measures whenever necessary. ^[4]
