Fixed star Alioth, Epsilon Ursae Majoris, is a 2nd-magnitude single star situated on the base of the tail of the Greater Bear, Ursa Major constellation. It is also one of the three bright stars that form the handle of the Big Dipper.
      Magnitude of 1.77, Spectral type A1III-IVp kB9, color blue-white. ^[1]

ε UMa is officially named Alioth.
      Ultimately from its indigenous Arabian name al-jaun, “the Black Horse, or Bull,” which became corrupted even in Arabic sources (where some of the corruptions carried other meanings). For example, in the Arabic manuscript of the Almagest that was translated into Latin in 1175 A.D., this name of ε UMa had apparently been miswritten as al-jauza or al-jauzā’ (the latter being identical to the modern Arabic for Orion and Gemini – see α Ori). Whatever was read in this Arabic manuscript was transliterated into Latin as alioze. In subsequent Latin copies, this name was further corrupted to aliore, Alcor, Alioth, etc. Since late medieval times, “Alioth” became the preferred name for ε UMa. (See also 80 UMa and θ Ser.) ^[2]
      ε, 2.1. Alioth, sometimes Allioth, seems to have originated in the first edition of the Alfonsine Tables. Al Bīrūnī said that it was Añgiras among the Hindu Seven Sages. In China it was Yuh Kang, the Gemmeous Transverse, a portion of an early astronomical instrument; while other stars between it and δ were Seang, the Minister of State. ^[3]
      In Chinese astronomy, α UMa is located in the asterism 北斗 Běidǒu, “Northern Dipper,” and is known by the following traditional names:
      北斗五 Běidǒuwǔ, “5th star of Northern Dipper.”
      玉衡 Yùhéng, “The Jade Sighting-Tube.”
      衡星 Héngxīng, “Star of measure.”
      廉贞 Liánzhēn, “Honest and chaste.”
      杀星 Shāxīng, “Weaken star.”
      天禽 Tiānqín, “Celestial birds.”
      五鬼 Wǔguǐ, “Five chief demons.” ^[4]

In ancient China, ε UMa was called Yuheng, “The Jade Sighting-Tube.” It was named after “an instrument used by the king to regulate astronomy.” It was “eight feet long, with a hole one inch in diameter. The bottom end is used to observe the stars.” It represents royal power and carries strong superstitious connotations, arising from the combination of Chinese folk beliefs and astronomy. ^[5]

Fixed star Alioth has the spectral type A1, indicating the planetary nature of Venus.

The Venus-like stars in Ursa Minor emphasize Venus’s harsher nature, as both bears have an “evil reputation”. ^[6]

BASIC INFLUENCES:   This star imparts to its natives good judgment, love of life, ease and comfort, grandly liberal, criticism, ruthlessness, sternness, power to win over others, sublime destruction, obstinacy, and egotism. ^[7]

The Honest Star

In Chinese astronomy, fixed star Alioth is the fourth star of Běidǒu, the “Northern Dipper” asterism, within the Zǐ wēi yuán, “Purple Forbidden Enclosure.” It is known as Yùhéng, “The Jade Sighting-Tube,” and Liánzhēn, “Honest and chaste,” but is most commonly referred to as Lian Zhen. It is one of the Fourteen Main Stars used in Chinese astrology (Purple Star Astrology).
      In ancient texts, the Lian Zhen Star (Alioth) is referred to as the “Killing Star” and the “Prisoner Star.” It is associated with impulsiveness, arrogance, a refusal to bow, a tendency to limit oneself, and a willful, headstrong personality. Among the fourteen major stars, it is the most arrogant and has the most violent personality.
      Alioth’s actions often carry a wicked air. This “wickedness” stems from a disbelief in evil, a “what’s wrong with doing what I like” attitude, a willingness to risk everything rather than compromise its beliefs, and a tendency to easily go to extremes in love and hate. Because of its strong individualism, it often rejects mainstream social values and morality, thereby increasing the likelihood of deviance.
      In ancient times, Alioth was a very unpopular star. However, in modern times with its diverse values, Alioth’s high level of action and willpower has ample room to shine. What it needs to strengthen is its endurance and emotional control, which will naturally lead to its success.
      Alioth is the master of officialdom and is suitable for politics and public office. It gives courage and resourcefulness, excellent public relations, and many opportunities for you. You are quite responsible in your actions and give people a friendly, easygoing, and unconcerned impression. However, because you are overly open and easygoing, you have significant trouble in your life.
      You always give people the impression of having a smile on your face. One thing that many people want to learn is not to care about the result first. Always give first and then ask for a return. Do not consider whether the return is good or not. At the same time, a good friend provides advice. Always speak the truth naturally and do not lie or deceive people.

However, the ideal partner is someone who can enjoy these activities with you, or at least not interfere with your socializing; otherwise, you will feel very disappointed.       If you fall in love with someone who is stronger and more arrogant than you, and if you feel that the other person is not as good as you, you will immediately turn away.
      Arrogant and domineering, with a sense of superiority, and a feeling of bestowing favors or marrying down.       Legend.   Callisto, daughter of Lycaon, king of Arcadia, of whom Jupiter was enamored, became a follower of Diana on account of her love of hunting. Jupiter sought Callisto by assuming the form of Diana, and Juno  who discovered the intrigue turned Callisto into a bear. Angry that the bear was placed in heaven, Juno requested her brother Neptune never to let those stars set within his kingdom, and for this reason they are always above the horizon in Europe. To account for the length of the bear’s tail [because in reality bears don’t have tails], it is said that Jupiter, fearing her teeth, lifted her by the tail, which became stretched because of her weight and the distance from earth to heaven.
      Influence.   According to Ptolemy, Ursa Major is like Mars. It is said to give a quiet, prudent, suspicious, mistrustful, self-controlled, patient nature, but an uneasy spirit and great anger and revengefulness when roused. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Zain and the 7th Tarot Trump “The Chariot.”
      Magical.   Gives craft, ingenuity and valor. ^[10]

Astrologically both Bears were said to presage an evil influence. They are particularly injurious as regards to the affairs of nations and kings. ^[6]
