Fixed star Algol, Beta Persei (β Per), is a 2nd-magnitude triple star system that marks the head of the Gorgon Medusa in Perseus Constellation.
The β Per system consists of a 2.12 magnitude binary star (β Per Aa1 + Aa2), and a 10.42 magnitude single star (β Per Ab). ^[1]

The components Aa1 and Aa2 form a type of eclipsing binary star termed an Algol variable. They regularly eclipse each other during their orbit, causing the system’s overall brightness to drop. The β Per system usually has a visual magnitude of 2.12, but its brightness fades to magnitude 3.39 every 2.867 days during the roughly 10-hour-long partial eclipses, when the larger but fainter β Per Aa2 passes in front of the brighter β Per Aa1. ^[1]

Applied in medieval times from an abbreviation of its modern Arabic name raʾs al-ghūl “the Demon’s Head” (for Ptolemy’s Gorgon-head). “Algol” is one of the oldest Arabic star names applied in the West, from the end of the 10th century A.D. ^[3]

Algol, the Demon, the Demon Star, and the Blinking Demon, from the Arabians’ Ra᾽s al Ghul, the Demon’s Head, is said to have been thus called from its rapid and wonderful variations; but I find no evidence of this, and that people probably took the title from Ptolemy. Al Ghul literally signifies a Mischief-maker.
Ptolemy catalogued it as τῶν ἐν γοργονίῳº ὁ λαμπρός, “the bright one of those in the Gorgon’s head,” which Al Tizini followed in his Nā᾽ir, for, with π, ρ, and ω, it made up that well-known group, itself being the Gorgonea prima; the Γοργόνιον of Chrysococca, Gorgoneum Caput of Vitruvius [IX.4.2], Caput Gorgonis of Hyginus, and the Gorgonis Ora of Manilius.
With astronomical writers of three centuries ago Algol was Caput Larvae, the Spectre’s Head. Hipparchos and Pliny made a separate constellation of the Gorgon stars as the Head of Medusa, this descending almost to our own day, although always connected with Perseus.
The Hebrews knew Algol as Rōsh ha Sāṭān, Satan’s Head, Chilmead’s Rosch hassatan, the Divels head; but also as Līlīth, Adam’s legendary first wife,⁠ the nocturnal vampire from the lower world that reappeared in the demonology of the Middle Ages as the witch Lilis, one of the characters in Goethe’s Walpurgis Nacht.

Astrologers of course said that it was the most unfortunate, violent, and dangerous star in the heavens, and it certainly has been one of the best observed, as the most noteworthy variable in the northern sky. ^[4]

β Per belongs to the Chinese asterism Daling, “Mausoleum,” representing a tomb. It has the astronomical name Daling Wu, “Mausoleum Five.” ^[5]

Algol Astrology

Fixed star Algol has the spectral class B8 + K0, which indicates the planetary nature of Jupiter and Mars. Ptolemy (160 AD) and Anonymous (379 AD) ^[6] said it was like Jupiter and Saturn.

JUPITER-MARS: High ambition, pride, love of power, grandeur of view. If rising, military honors. If culminating, high ecclesiastical honor, martial preferment, prosperity in business. ^[7]

Caput Medusae begets the Native a certain dogged nature and violence, whereby he either procures sudden death unto himself, or is the cause of it to others. ^[8]

ALGOL. β Persei.
Legend. Algol represents the head of the Gorgon Medusa, who was slain by Perseus. Medusa, who was the only mortal one of the three Gorgon sisters, was originally a beautiful maiden, but her hair was changed into hissing serpents by Minerva in consequence of her having become by Neptune the mother of Chrysaor and Pegasus in one of Minerva’s temples. This gave her so fearful an appearance that everyone who looked at her was changed into stone.
Notes. A white binary and variable star marking the Medusa’s Head healed in the hand of Perseus. Its diameter is 1,060,000 miles, and its density only a little above that of a cork. Algol is from Ra’s al Ghul, the Demon’s Head, other names in frequent use being Caput Algol and Caput Medusæ. It was known as Lilith by the Hebrews, after the nocturnal vampire said to be Adam’s first wife; and Tseih She, Piled up Corpses, by the Chinese. [mistaken for π Per, Jishi]
Influence. Of the nature of Saturn and Jupiter. It causes misfortune, violence, decapitation, hanging, electrocution and mob violence, and gives a dogged and violent nature that causes death to the native or others. It is the most evil star in the heavens.
Magical. Algol is one of the 15 Behenian Fixed Stars. Its image is a human head cut off at the neck. It gives success to petitions, makes the wearer bold and magnanimous, preserves the body, protects against witchcraft, and turns evil and spells back upon those who work them. It rules diamond, black hellebore, and mugwort. ^[7]

ALGOL. β Persei.
An eclipsing variable star system comprising two components ranging between 2.2 & 3.5 in a period of 2.87 days; the eclipse lasts 10 hours. The spectral type of the main star is B8, with a temperature of 12,500 degrees Kelvin. The eclipsing star is dark, and no color has been assigned to it. Algol, anciently thought to be the demon star, has two well-defined natures. One is high in spiritual values, and the other is on the primitive side, evidenced by extreme misfortune. The darker side of Algol is similar to a spectral ‘S’ star, while the brighter star is of the spectral B, indicating helium is prominent and can be related to influences of the spectral class stars, W, 0, and B.
The darker star circles the brighter star every 68 hours, presenting a periodic change in brightness as viewed from the Earth. Since an ephemeris is not possible or available, the influences are listed as either positive or negative, with the darker side for the negative influences and the brighter side for the positive influences.
BASIC INFLUENCES: Some nativities can have both negative and positive influences. The brighter side, as of spectral classes W, 0. & B. The native is sober, serious, patient, talkative, and has high preferment, honors, and success in their careers. Native dislikes sordid actions, is faithful, not bigoted. Algol. Beta in Perseus.
Algol is the Head of Gorgo Medusa. This name is derived from the Arabic Al Ghoul, meaning “demon,” “evil spirit,” or “devil.” Derived from the same root as “alcohol.” Algol is part of a double star system. Its darker brother circles the brighter star in about 69 hours, in such a manner that an occultation for nine hours appears as viewed from Earth, and this gives a periodic change in brightness. Continually, its brightness alternates between values 2.2 and 3.5. It is assumed that other dark stars belong to the solar system of Algol.
The dark one has the property of pure Saturn character; the lighter one corresponds not only to Saturnian influence but also to Mars-Uranus-Pluto nature. If the dark fellow is showing toward Earth’s path, the destructive invisible action is exercised. These will be the hours in which Algol is least bright. In the olden times, people were well aware of this.
Dr Lomer wrote in Kosmobiologie, August 1950: “Arabic commanders-in-chief, in times of conquest, made it a point that no important battles were begun when the light of Algol was weak.”
In spite of the appreciable distance from the ecliptic, this double star’s influence is strongly felt and in more cases it is disastrous. Primitive natives will be of the base mind with an inclination to brutality and violence, especially when Algol is found together with Mars or Saturn.
According to Asboga, it is very difficult to avoid accidents and severe injuries is difficult if Algol is conjunction Sun, Moon or the malefics.
Elsbeth Ebertin’s cosmogram shows Sun conjunction Algol and only 2.5° distant from Pluto. She could not possibly harm even an animal. But in spite of her knowledge that she was constantly in danger, she could not avoid the air raid on Freiburg, even though she was warned shortly before.
Mars conjunction Algol was in the chart of Bormann, one of Hitler’s closest colleagues. We find Algol conjunction Pluto in the cosmogram of Dr. Lomer, a writer who specializes in borderline science; H. Nuesslein, the medium-painter; and Stalin, a dictator. Mars was conjunction Algol when Marconi was born; he pioneered wireless telegraphy, and he had a tragic end. Neptune conjunction Algol was sinificant for Admiral Canaris, chief of German espionage.
As everything has two sides, it has to be said that “high spiritual rays” are emanating from Algol also, but only those human beings can receive them who have already reached high spiritual development. Even then, it has to be noted that those particular persons will have difficulties and obstacles in their way, and they must use much energy to overcome these handicaps. If their endeavors fail, strong counter forces and enmities will be present.
In connection with Algol artificial teeth are often the case. Again and again it is confirmed that life contains great handicaps (good fortune is rare) if Saturn and Mars are found in the same place. ^[10]

A dark companion orbits the main star in 69 hours, obscuring its light for 9 hours. The Chinese observed the changing brightness and said: Bright brilliance means there will be countless dead, especially when Mars is nearby; if Algol was shining when the sun was dull, it was considered a lucky sign. The Babylonians called it the “boomerang”; we might say, in more modern terms, the guillotine of the heavens, for when positioned near the sun, it threatens decapitation. The dark star is purely Saturnian in nature, its brighter companion Saturn with a Mars-Uranian influence. In the horoscopes of the mass murderers Haarmann and Kürten, Algol is conjunct Mars; in Kürten’s case, it is also conjunct the sun, Saturn, Pluto, and Neptune, the latter indicating, in particular, a sexually bestial nature. In such horoscopes, the fixed star creates a disastrous receptivity to lower astral influences, as its Arabic name “Demon” already indicates. However, it must be noted that the dark star in particular, but also its bright companion, also emits highly spiritual radiations, which, however, are likely to be received only by very spiritual people in whose horoscope everything else is harmonious and especially where Saturn is already vibrating at a high octave. ^[11]

Algol has the nature of Jupiter, but it also has a long tradition as a troublemaker. It is said to be one of the most unfortunate, violent, and dangerous stars in the heavens. This is explained by the fact that Jupiter takes on all of its most perverse meanings: too much heat, as it were, resulting in extremist actions that undo all the beneficial qualities of this planet. ^[12]

Algol, alias Caput Medusa, is the Demon herself. Indeed she is, without doubt, counted the most malefic of all stars in astrology, even though Ptolemy gives her the less obviously ominous Saturn-Jupiter styling. Medusa’s Head, the meaning of the Latin title, is being held in Perseus’s Hand, which is she is star β in his constellation.
What seems to have been missed by the old school is that Capulus and Algol each have a very positive side to them. The sword removed a monstrosity from our world, and the monstrosity’s head did, in turn, rescue Andromeda – and, by the same token, all of us – from yet another monster of great evil. True that Algol comes from an old Arabic word meaning particularly nasty spirit. However, as we have noted, we all too easily look back and within ourselves only to be halted at our traumas and ‘nasty bits,’ failing to penetrate further to the glory beyond them. Lilith is not Medusa at all, not the ugly blockage in us but the beauty beyond it. Once we pass the ‘ghoul’ in Algol, we find the pure Spirit in that word, just as its modern derivative, Alcohol, which does so much damage if used irresponsibly, is also the background material of the Universe, without which nothing else exists at all.
How Capulus, and more especially Algol star, signify on horoscopes depends entirely on how the person concerned does or does not live life with an honest sense of purpose to it, a desire at least to try to live up to some philosophy, religion or ideal. If that is present in the person, question, or event for which the chart is drawn, then all will go well. The author has seen this happen so often once the superstition about these stars is dropped. If purpose and intent are ‘shady,’ then we don’t need stars to tell us that things are likely, with good reason, to go wrong.
Yes, we know that Algol often does show up in disastrous accidents with death as their climax, but we must remember that our too-common state of disbelief in life beyond the one event since birth that is the lot of all of us. We fear because we do not believe, and we fear to overcome our fear, lest to be fearless of death should somehow cause us to love mortal life the less. We fear letting go of the past because we lack faith in the Hand that holds the future. With Algol poorly aspected in our charts, we may well repeat the popular but obscene: ‘Better the devil you know than the devil you don’t,’ but those with the Star of the Spirit better placed, we find the person who knows better than to slander the Hand as a devil. Many a fine counselor and healer has Algol thus placed.
Alcyone, η Tauri, and the whole Pleiades group are noted in astrology for their association with deep sorrows and tragedies, bereavements showing strongly with this star. Its position by longitude soon after Algol in Perseus may account for the gloomy quality since Algol is much connotative with a violent death in mundane astrology, and that, of course, means bereavement for someone else. As a practicing astrological consultant, however, the present author has found that one or both of these stars prominent, even though ‘afflicted,’ on one’s horoscope makes for an excellent counselor to others in the time of bereavement, with a special gift for bringing out the brighter spiritual significance of Death as the transition to Greater Life and this so very often relieves the counselor him or herself from the misery that others so commonly suffer in that area of life. ^[13]

Fixed star Algol rules one-quarter inch up the base of the neck. ^[14]

I have found that a strong Algol placement in the natal chart corresponds to very distinctive facial features and hair. There may be a striking beard or glorious long hair. The teeth, nose or ears may also be striking in some way, either extremely beautiful, large, deformed or missing.

Legend. Perseus, the son of Jupiter and Danæ, was furnished with the sword, cap and wings of Mercury and the shield of Minerva. He killed the Medusa by cutting off her head and afterwards rescued and married Andromeda. On his return home he inadvertently killed his grandfather Acrisius and pined away through grief, whereupon Jupiter took pity on him and placed him among the stars.
Influence. According to Ptolemy, Perseus is like Jupiter and Saturn. It is said to give an intelligent, strong, bold and adventurous nature, but a tendency to lying. By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Lamed and the 12th Tarot Trump “The Hanged Man.”
Magical. Frees from envy and witchcraft and preserves from lightning and tempests.” ^[7]

Called Cacodaemon by medieval astrologers, Perseus (Per) contains stars of the nature of Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Mercury according to Tetrabiblos. The constellation is indicative of events affecting large numbers of people, especially those caused by major meteorological phenomena. This constellation when prominent in a geneathical chart is said to denote adventurous individuals, but also those who are less than honest in their dealings with others. ^[12]

Algol and Evolution

In the mythology of Medusa, we see her as a mutant. A mutation is the driver of genetic evolution. It is no surprise that the Algol star is prominent in the history of the Human Genome Project.

June 1, 1866, Charles Benedict, the father of the American eugenics movement, was born. Mercury was conjunct Algol. He sterilized 60,000 “unfit” or mutant Americans and “strongly influenced the Holocaust in Europe”. ^[16]
