Leo Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Denebola on September 14

Fixed star Denebola, Beta Leonis, is a single star in the tail of the Lion, Leo Constellation. Magnitude 2.14, spectral type A3Va, color white.

The traditional name Denebola is shortened from Deneb Alased, from the Arabic phrase ذنب الاسد ðanab al-asad ‘tail of the lion.’ In Hindu astronomy, Denebola marks the beginning of the twelfth of nakshatra: उत्तर फाल्गुनी Uttara Phalgunī ‘second reddish one.’

Denebola Astrology

The spectral type A3 indicates the planetary nature of Venus.

A blue star in the Lion’s tail. It gives swift judgment, despair, regrets, public disgrace, misfortune from the elements of nature, and happiness turned to anger, and makes its natives noble, daring, self-controlled, generous and busy with other people’s affairs. According to Ptolemy, it is of the nature of Saturn and Venus; to Wilson and Pearce, of Saturn, Venus and Mercury; to Simmonite, of Uranus; and to Alvidas, of Mercury, Uranus and Mars. [1]

β Leonis. A white star. Spectral class A4. The native makes swift judgments, has despair and is regretful, publicly disgraced, happiness turned to sorrow or anger, the native is noble, generous, busy with other people’s affairs, anxious, and has benefits that do not last. Illness. Denebola, a white star, nevertheless, may create problems for its natives, in particular with Venus, Mercury and Mars conjunctions. Unless the celestial objects are strongly aspected, there remains a potential for suicide, a despairing life, nervous breakdowns, and self-created problems for its natives. Mercury, in particular, should be strongly aspected to prevent any problems. These natives are ‘single-minded and tenacious.’ [7]

Denebola was of unlucky influence in astrology, portending misfortune and disgrace, and thus opposed to Regulus in character as in position in the figure. [8]

In classical and medieval times, a man’s misfortune and disgrace were generally attributed to a woman. This perhaps explains the bad reputation of so many Venusian stars such as Denebola. However, in this instance the indications are for a noble and generous individual and the misfortune is apt to stem from this nobility of character. [4]

Denebola in the Tail of the Lion has a Uranian nature and it is supposed that in mundane horoscopes, major catastrophes are triggered by it. Depending on position and aspect to other stellar bodies in a personal cosmogram, either preferment or fall is credited to this star. Found on the Ascendant and especially in company with Mercury, a quarrelsome nature with a liking for legal action is attributed to Denebola. It could also mean that this star is the cause of very exciting events. Badly placed in a map with Mercury or Uranus, mental diseases (mostly incurable ones) are indicated. Fine aspects, however, will further work connected with matters of reform and progress. [2]

Denebola, β Leonis is the second brightest of the Constellation and easy to see in the sky without optical aids. The name comes from Al Danab Al Asad. The Tail of the Lion, so Danabala. It lies 22° past Regulus (the Lion faces backwards in the Zodiac) and so it has been in the Virgo Sign since about 300 AD. Ptolemy gave Denebola a Saturn-Venus quality, which must make it at least mildly ‘Benefic’ even in traditional astrology, since Venus was held to be the only planet that could really get along with Saturn. The tails of the celestial creatures are at least as important as their heads, being in some cases their weaponry (Scorpio), in others their means of communication (Cetus, the Whale), in others their link to the past, and, of course, sometimes ‘the part we don’t talk about’! The Lion’s tail has the quality of being farthest from the end that one should not approach unwarily, and so it has a venusian quality of peace and safety about it, but we should still not be tempted into ‘pulling the lion’s tail,’ as the vernacular saying has wisely warned. Therein lies the Saturn quality of Denebola. We should expect, therefore, that this star symbolizes strength from the Lion along with both the ability and the need to use it wisely and constructively. There should also be the note of looking forward while at the same time being able to draw upon past experience, gained at the head end of the animal, so to say, since this Lion faces back down the Zodiac, as already remarked. Perhaps the ‘achilles heel’ of monarchs, even the most progressive of them, is that their positions are much steeped in past tradition that it is all too difficult to come forward from it, even if they want to. Thus, from this special forward-looking attribute of Denebola, we might well ponder that on with this star strong in their horoscope is at least well favored, and possibly more so, in our times – than with the mighty Regulus at his service. And those are indeed the qualities of Denebola. [3]

Anonymous of 379 AD said Denebola resembles Saturn and Venus. [6]

Denebola rules the front of the chest. [5]

Leo Constellation

Ptolemy makes the following observations: “Of the stars in Leo, two in the head are like Saturn and partly like Mars. The three in the neck are like Saturn, and in some degree like Mercury. . . . Those in the loins . . . Saturn and Venus: those in the thighs resemble Venus, and, in some degree, Mercury.” It is said that the stars in the neck, back and wing all bring trouble, disgrace and sickness affecting the part of the body ruled by the sign, especially if they happen to be in conjunction with the Moon. By the Kabalists, Leo is associated with the Hebrew letter Kaph and the 11th Tarot Trump “Strength.” [1]

In mundane astrology, Leo Constellation is associated with royal events, especially the ascension or death of kings and queens, the election or death of heads of state, assassinations, uprisings and massacres, currency and the stock exchange, the Vatican and the European Union.

Fixed Star Denebola Conjunctions

Ascendant conjunct Denebola: Riches, preferment and good fortune attended by many dangers and anxieties through own folly, benefits seldom last, trouble and sickness. [1]

Found on the Ascendant and especially in company with Mercury, a quarrelsome nature with a liking for legal action is attributed to Denebola. It could also mean that this star is the cause of very exciting events.[2]

A splendid and illustrious life; glorious, mighty and commanding nature; fame, busy with many activities, bountiful resources, well known or feared in cities and regions. Prosperity from youth and in own city. Prosperous natives, who have many possessions, are well known and subject to passions, commit obscenities or speak softly. They have harsh words towards the pleasures of love and, with the passing of age, participate in some priestly office, are esteemed for some religious practice or self-mastery, refuse some foods (red meat?) and are experts in occult books. They become lovers of the sciences of the sky, their eyes are somewhat glaucous and glittering, and their appearance is beautiful. [6]

Imum Coeli conjunct Denebola: A splendid and illustrious life; glorious, mighty and commanding nature; fame, busy with many activities, bountiful resources, well known or feared in cities and regions. Prosperity in old age or through savings, investments or pensions, death will be famous and known to all. [6]

Sun conjunct Denebola: Honor and preferment with danger, public disgrace, and finally ruin, disease, fevers and acute ailments. [1]

Natives with this conjunction can develop their talents to gain high honors in their chosen career. Wealth and good fortune a possibility. Any anxieties will be due to the natives folly and unless well controlled, benefits seldom last. [7]

Tío Camuñas 0°04′ (and Mercury, AC), Amy Winehouse 0°06′ (and Mercury), Giorgio Baglivi 0°58′ (and Venus), Oliver Stone 1°14′ (and Mercury), Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex 1°33′, Queen Letizia of Spain 1°43′ (and Mercury, Mars), William Bligh 2°00′.

Moon conjunct Denebola: Honor and preferment among the vulgar but final disgrace and ruin, violent disease of a vital organ, blindness and injuries to the eyes, accidents, losses through servants, domestic quarrels, temporary separation from marriage partner. If, at the same time, Saturn or Mars is with Algol, death by sentence. [1]

A splendid and illustrious life; great, distinguished and opulent nature. [6]

High honors and preferment in association with public affairs. The native should avoid getting involved with questionable associates and avoid controversial issues. This could be politically, socially, or with members of the native’s family, which could create unpleasant situations that are not easily or readily resolved. Some natives with this conjunction could develop the tendency to gravitate towards undesirables or undesirable associates. Natives must learn to keep their counsel. Violence possible. [7]

Mercury conjunct Denebola: Many losses through agents or servants and through writings, loss of one of the family through malignant or contagious disease. [1]

Pisitive Mercury: The native has a sharp mentality, has the ability to make rapid decisions, is very tenacious, single-minded, busy or interested in ‘other people’s affairs’; this may surface by becoming involved with less fortunate people, or those the native believes are wrongly abused or accused, or in some manner serving the people. The native is of a worrisome nature, not readily apparent. Their decisions, while generally correct, will at times be open to question. If the natives’ Mercury is not strongly posited, i.e., in conjunction or square to Pluto, there may be a tendency for the native to be of a wavering nature. Acquaintances and friends may create problems for the native, which could prove temporarily embarrassing. These natives tend to be of an uncompromising nature.

Negative Mercury: In general, the same attributes apply to both positive and negative nativities. However, the less advanced or more negative natives tend to make swift decisions that could create problems, they may become involved in controversial issues. Problems they create can be of a lasting nature. Friends create problems for these natives, who tend to be uncompromising. [7]

Venus conjunct Denebola: Strong passions, led astray early in life, ruined through love affairs. [1]

These natives may develop a tendency towards entertaining strong feelings or opinions on people and subjects. If married, they tend to either remake their partners or look upon their partners in a parental fashion. The more negative or less advanced natives could be subject to sudden losses, most likely due to improper or lack of parental training, poor environment, or – early in their life, someone deliberately set the stage for neurosis. ‘Despair and regrets’ follow later in life. Most of these natives leave their mark, for good or for bad. [7]

Mars conjunct Denebola: Bitter, vindictive, cruel, unpopular, loss of position and public disgrace. [1]

More positive natives will appear to be of a calm, determined nature. They may be forthright, ambitious,  shrewd and energetic. Negatively, the natives will tend to cover up their shortcomings with excuses. Negative nativities subject themselves to self-made problems; they may be unnecessarily critical, of a carping nature, even vindictive and bitter. This will make them unpopular, and although they might be aware of this, nevertheless, they will continue their carping attitude. [7]

This causes slight lesions in the lungs giving the native a burning sensation. The lesions and tiny cuts can become clogged due to colds or smoking, and the lungs begin to deteriorate. Wrapping a cloth containing warmed spearmint herb would be very beneficial. Herbs have a great healing energy that the body can absorb. [5]

Jupiter conjunct Denebola: Pride, hypocrisy, disappointed life, troubles abroad or through relatives, secret enemies, danger of imprisonment or death by sentence. [1]

The native is prideful, generally of their families and their families background, but also of their accomplishments or what they have tried to accomplish, no matter how small. Unless Jupiter is of a positive nature, there remains the possibility of a disappointed life with despair and regrets to follow. [7]

Yoko Ono 0°00′, Sid Vicious 0°54′, Will Smith 1°06′ (and Pluto).

Saturn conjunct Denebola: Critical, always complaining, many enemies, loss through servants and thieves, domestic sorrow, wife afflicted or children mentally unsound or deformed. [1]

There is a weakness in the lungs causing fluids to accumulate. Congestion of the lungs occurs, which can also affect the heart, resulting in a sluggish heartbeat. This can be painful, but it continues as these individuals are not aware there is a problem at this point. Usually, they are the ones who smoke and who cough frequently. The dull, aching pain in the chest that they feel is more often than not blamed on the heart, but the problem is in the lungs. If the problem is not taken care of, they have a change of attitude toward others. They become impatient and make unusual demands on others. The herb chamomile is excellent for the lungs and should be taken daily. [5]

Dr. Phil McGraw 0°00′, Ronaldinho 1°44′, Jeff Bridges 2°02′.

Mars and Saturn conjunct Denebola: This point would cause considerable deterioration of the lungs. These persons would be coughing up blood and debris. Tuberculosis is a typical ailment at this point. This can be considered karmic as they would have to suffer for a long time in order that they have a change of attitude, something brought from a past life. All combinations of the herbs should be taken by those with this conjunction on this degree. [5]

Uranus conjunct Denebola: Subject to fits, idiotic, insane, and sometimes violent, sharp and cunning, may commit murder during insanity. [1]

Pierre Laval 0°20′, Pamela Anderson Lee 0°23′, David Cameron 0°28′, Nicole Kidman 0°38′, Martin Bryant 0°40′, John Maynard Keynes 0°45′, Bill Shorten 0°45′, John Wayne Bobbitt 0°47′ (and Pluto), Benito Mussolini 0°52′, Joe Rogan 1°21′ (and Pluto), Christopher Pyne 1°27′, Julio Bocca 1°30′, Heidi Fleiss 1°31′, Coco Chanel 2°00′, Franklin D. 1. Can you tell me what it means when it’s conjunct Pluto? I couldn’t see it at the bottom of the list.
Many thanks and much appreciation for all your hard work.

    • Hi Katie. Pluto wasn’t discovered when Robson did his interpretations. My best guess is that the disappointment and sadness of being taken advantage of in relationships would be more intense, but then lead to a positive transformation eventually.

      • Thank you so much I have Pluto @ 20 25 sitting in my 4th house. The energy yesterday was very intense for me and there are big changes going on in the home front as Uranus also occupies the 4th. I’m still feeling it today. As to your comment on relationships, this does resonate with me. Many thanks again.

      • Just exactly what Robson did or didn’t do in terms of adding his own work seems forever lost, but the majority of the material in his book on fixed stars apparently came from the work of the American Astrologer Henry Clay Hodges. And it would indeed require a lot of very diligent study to arrive at the level of accuracy Hodges repackaged delineations contain.

    • Hi Donny, hard to say really. I think the negatives of the fixed stars are minimized as you continue to spiritually grow. I have seen this star work really well with some but then quite nasty with others, depending on associated aspects. For example, a square to Saturn from this star would be a lot more challenging than a trine to Jupiter. Do you have any aspects to your AC/DC?

        • That’s very helpful then with the trine to the Moon being much stronger than the minor aspect to the less personal planets. Much friendlier influence on relationships too.

          • Thanks Jamie, the thing is that my exalted moon is directly sitting on where another fixed star Algol is, and my moon is on 9th house cusp. I’ve read about your other post on Algol and it seems like that I need to explore into the depths of the darker side of human psyche. Am I correct to say that?

  2. Hi Jamie I have denebola exactly conjunct my south node – any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks Lisa

  3. Hi Jaime,
This is a very interesting article about Denebola, one of the most detailed information I ever read on the web. It sounds like a lot of despair and losses associates with this fixed star. If a person is to have a Sun and Mercury conjuncting Denebola in the 5th house of Virgo with an opposition of Jupiter Retrograde in the 11th house of Pisces. Would you say this person is destined to have many losses in the areas of friendships, possibly children and most likely susceptible to public disgrace in any form of creative expressions? Also, do you know any well known celebrities or significant public figures with this fixed star in their chart that I could research on? Your thoughts would greatly be appreciated it. Thank you!

    • I don’t use Houses or Signs for interpretation, only aspects and fixed stars. Remember the disgrace from Denebola usually comes from women so I think you should avoid gossip or boasting around women and you should be OK.

  4. glad you mentioned women in another reply. Thanks to that virgo stelluim this star is conjunct both my sun and jupiter, and i keep thinking how any, trouble I have in life always seemed to have a female (almost never a male) behind it.

Thankfully some other stars conjunct the planets so there is good things to tone this one’s effects down.

    • Hi Lena, your experience is supported by nearly everyone I have known with this star prominent.

  5. My mother has Saturn 21:25 Virgo & 2nd husband Saturn 21:55 Virgo. Both complain constantly. Mother has Venus Square Saturn – she never had a good word for anyone nor did anyone have a good word for her.

  6. My venus in virgo 20degrees 49′ conjunct denebola , and my venus opposite my moon in pisces 19degrees 12′ , is that bad? i felt a lot of misfortunes since i was kid, i’m 27yo now

    • Hi Rex, As the part of Fortune is calculated using Ascendant, Sun and Moon, I would combine the influence of all three to get rishes, honor and wealth. Holding onto all those would depend on aspects to your Part of Fortune.

  7. Many thanks for your valuable comments. Each person does have a mission in life to fulfill and fixed stars enable us to know more in detail about our mission in life. In that sense, fixed star astrology is preferable to zodiacal astrology based on twelve signs.

  8. I once read the ancients believed this star could transfer negative karma from son to father, and I believe it happened to my husband born 8/28/1956. He has an estranged son with very difficult chart, born 4/14/80 with Saturn on Denebola. My husband nearly died and had surgery 3/12/2017 on the Full Moon with Denebola highly prominent. The surgeon removed a part of the sternum.

  9. The conditions my husband experienced are quite in agreement with the star’s reputation. My husband is a good hearted soul who would do anything for his kids, loved to cook family dinners, etc. but is unfairly called an “a**hole” by that family and has suffered much abuse. Also quite ironically, being informed of his father’s dire condition, the response was “I’m not involved in that anymore”. His father nearly died of a freak infection, lost sternum bone and clavicle bone to be precise, on the Denebola star in the son’s chart. The ancients knew something about transfer of bad karma from son to father.

  10. Interesting to start learning about fixed stars, can’t wait to learn more… However as often in astrology I find it disturbing to read info that has a malefic effect of fixed stars. E.g. Debebola is within 2° from my Moon (12H in the birth chart, I live on another continent tho). And within 2° the other way from my mom’s Mars. As someone who is into remedies rather than to scare people with fatal predifined things I wonder what remedies are for various fixed star influences?

Jamie, also what orb is usually taken for conjunctions and and other aspects to fixed stars?

  11. I would like to know more about this star if anyone can suggest more info. I found this star in conjunct with Anderson Coopers Pluto and Uranus. His Gemini sun is square to both planets. However, I don’t see Cooper stuck in a mental hospital. instead his other stars have given him position, health and morality.

  12. Denebola seems to have stricken us again. I left 2 comments above, about the March 2017 full moon with Denebola prominent.

My husband has an estranged son. The son’s Saturn is exact on the IC, conjunct Denebola. My husband nearly died from a freak collarbone infection during the March 2017 full moon. My husband is now disabled in the “tail”.

From ancient folklore, I believe that Karma can be transferred from son to the father on Denebola. My husband’s chart has no aspects to this point.

The full moon Sept. 2019 involving Denebola has left me disabled. The disability is in the “tail” and my chest is injured. It looks like the son’s Saturn can affect both “parents” on his dad’s side (I’m step-mom). The point squares my ascendant.

The son unreasonably has “no good word” for his father or anyone around his father. My husband has been unfairly called “a**hole” by that entire branch of family for 30 years.

I think Denebola is a very strong point, and the ancient wisdom is applicable. This is one nasty star.

    • Correction: my husband’s chart does have aspects to this point. Hubby’s Mars is opposite Virgo 21-22; Nessus is square. I read this as anger and abuse, centered around the Saturn (Denebola) point in his son’s chart. The son has an off-the-charts temper, the worst I’ve ever seen.

Sometimes a point exists in one’s chart, because of your relation to another person. For example, my Nessus is nearly conjunct my Moon. I try to be aware to never be abusive toward others because of my emotions, but my mother is a truly abusive person. I have Nessus at the Moon, because of my mother. Moon=Mom/Emotions Nessus=Abuse.

My husband is not an “angry” man. His Mars is in Pisces. He takes action to help others, which could be bad for him, possibly absorbing bad karma from others because he’s trying to shield them in a way. He has suffered much abuse from others.

  13. I know many interesting things about astrology, but I am not all knowing about trines, conjuncts, yods and knowing what position meaning they represent, often having to look each up. I need mine listed, pointed out. Can I pay you to view, decipher my chart? I too, wondering about what my Denebola placement means for me. It isn’t all that busy, nor jammed up, like some natal charts I’ve seen. I need to get a handle on this for enlightenment purposes. I am either having awakening moments or slipping. Trying to connect dots to what is responsible for what.
    Thank you for your time.
    Lisa

  14. What if it’s conjunct Moon at 20′ 25″ Virgo? I’m wondering if there are any ways to make this association more positive.

  15. Hi Isabella, I have the same, moon 21 Virgo. What strikes me is that the general description of Denebola is reasonably positive, but the descriptions of Denebola combined with the planets is pretty bad. Jamie, why is that? I recognize the part that my wife and I were separated temporarily a few times when I was working abroad (4 months in Sydney once). And an occasional desperate feeling. And despite I did a good job I lost that job a few times. Other than that I’m OK, I recognize the arguing, but I also recognize the more peaceful qualities. It’s a complicated star.

  16. There is a small problem with this whole fixed stars theory. So I have Denebola exactly on Moon… position. But the declination of Denebola differs more than 10 degrees from the declination of the moon. So this is quite far away from the moon actually. If you would allow 2 degrees orb for the position you should also allow no more than 2 degrees of declination difference. This is actually a big problem. The average astrologer doesn’t tell you that…

  17. Hi Jamie, just wandering why you would ignore the declination. First of all it is about the difference in declination between the star and the planet it conjuncts with, not the ecliptic. Secondly: if the declination would differ about 10 degrees, that would be about the same as when the position would differ 10 degrees, right? Seen from the earth, both would be quite a distance apart, right?
