Fixed star Khambalia, Lambda Virginis (λ Vir), is a 5th magnitude binary star system on the train of the garment of the Maiden, Virgo Constellation.
Magnitude 4.52 (5.00 + 5.63), spectral type A1 V (A1V + A1V), color blue-white. λ Vir is a spectroscopic binary star with a combined spectrum of A1V. Both components are Am stars, a type of chemically peculiar star of spectral type A with an overabundance of the Iron-group metals and heavier elements. ^[1]

λ Vir is officially named Khambalia.
The Coptic (Egyptian) term Khambalia means “Crooked-clawed” (perhaps designating an agricultural device or a symbol of secret knowledge); it appears in mantic texts for the star in the foot of Virgo. ^[2]
ι, κ and λ Vir were the Coptic lunar station Khambalia, “Crooked-clawed.” ^[3]

In Chinese astronomy, λ Vir is named 亢宿四 Kàngsusì, “Neck Constellation IV.” It belongs to the asterism 亢 Kàng, “Neck,” the 1st asterism of the 2nd lunar mansion, also named Kang. ^[4]

Khambalia Astrology

Fixed star Khambalia has the spectral type A1, indicating the planetary nature of Venus and, to a lesser extent, Jupiter.
Khambalia also has a Mars influence. As an Am star, it has an overabundance of the Iron-group metals and heavier elements. Compare: Acubens, Castor, Khambalia, Kurhah, Merak, Sirius.

KHAMBLIA. λ Virginus. A small star situated on the left foot of Virgo. From the Coptic meaning Crooked-clawed. Of the nature of Mercury and Mars. It causes swift violence, unreliability, changeability, and an argumentative nature. ^[5]

KHAMBLIA. λ Virginus. A small white star. Spectral class A2. The native is subject to changing conditions, conversational problems, self-destruction, unexpected gains, good fortune, philosophical inclinations, pragmatic, sociable, argumentive, impersonal. ^[6]

It is a Mercury-Mars star by Ptolemy. The name has its roots in old Coptic and means ‘Crooked Claw’, most probably the same device which we call also the Swastika, and whose ancient symbolism contained the idea of a secret knowledge, accessible to us, but only if one knows the way to get to it, as we find also with the symbolism of the maze in other cultures. The word ‘Shambala’ has a similar root and meaning; so has the pentagram, so that the Arabic word for Five, Khamsa, may well also derive from the same piece of mystique. Khamr, wine, also has a connection, being so often a symbol for the ‘secret of life’, ‘the Spirit’ again, as well as the means so often used to enter a transcendental (or just inebriated) state of consciousness. Both Sufi and Alchemical literature are of course rich in this allegorical form.
So Khambalia is very much a star of the penetration of secrets and, although within the Constellation of Virgo by the map, its present location by Sign is at 6°38′ of (Scorpio), ‘a long way from home’, and at 12°11′ Libra even when we have corrected its sidereal placing. So the Mars in the simile which Ptolemy gave it is that of Mars in its second ruler-ship, rather than the open energy of Aries. Consequently this star denotes those good at applying intellect to deep research of any kind, to police-type investigation, to espionage, and also to such pursuits as alchemy and the esoteric in general.
If two horoscopes each have a strong feature, the one on this star, the other opposite to it, there is evidence to suggest that the relationship between the two can appear quite malefic on the surface, yet with a deep understanding of each other, even a willing co-operation at a deep subliminal level, it is as though their apparent conflict is part of an act by which both are together finding the way to the source of their Being, the center of that swastika in them. It is hoped that readers have by now ceased to associate the swastika with the regime that briefly made it notorious from 1933 to 1945. ^[7]

Constellation Kang the Neck

The four stars of the Kang (Neck) Mansion represent the Emperor’s inner court, overseeing all matters submitted from across the realm. They govern the hearing of lawsuits, the administration of justice, and the recording of merits. Also known as the Shū miào (the sparse temple, or the temple of Venus), it governs epidemics and diseases.
If the stars are bright and large, loyal ministers will help maintain public safety; if they move or waver, many illnesses will follow. They represent the Emperor’s throne and serve as a celestial omen. If invisible at the Autumn Equinox, grain crops suffer, and prices soar.

If a comet transgresses Kang Su, disaster will strike the country; its appearance brings floods, war, epidemics, and ministerial rebellion; a white color signifies death or mourning.
If a bō xīng (a hairy, hazy, or rayed star) transgresses Kang Su, the nation is in peril, and floods and war will follow; its entry causes mass displacement; its exit brings famine.
If a meteor or falling star enters Kang Su, foreign envoys will arrive, and crops will mature; if it exits, the Emperor dispatches envoys and issues amnesties. Li Chunfeng stated: “If a meteor enters Kang, a favored minister dies.”
If clouds or vapors transgress Kang Su: bluish-green brings epidemics; white signifies earthworks or construction projects; black signifies floods; red signifies imminent warfare. Another interpretation says: if white, the people suffer from violent diseases; if yellow, it indicates earthworks or construction projects. ^[11]

Legend. The Virgo constellation is said to represent Erigone, daughter of Icarius, who hanged herself through grief at the death of her father (Bootes). According to other accounts it is Astraea, daughter of one of the Titans, who sided with the Gods against her own father.
Influence. Ptolemy makes the following observations; “The stars in the head of Virgo, and that at the top of the southern wing, operate like Mercury and somewhat like Mars: the other bright stars in the same wing, and those about the girdle, resemble Mercury in their influence, and also Venus, moderately . . . those at the points of the feet and at the bottom of the garments are like Mercury, and also Mars, moderately.” By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Gimel and the 3rd Tarot Trump “The Empress.” ^[5]

The Constellation of the Virgin
Now called Virgo (Vir), this constellation is indicative of an abundance in harvest and a fruitfulness of agriculture in general. But when prominent in the charts of eclipses it portends events concerning kings (heads of state) and in regard can be an ill omen indeed. ^[12]

In astrology this constellation and Gemini were the House of Mercury. But usually, and far more appropriately, Virgo’s stars have been given over to the care of Ceres, her namesake, the long-time goddess of the harvest. For her astrological colors Virgo assumed black speckled with blue; and was thought of as governing the abdomen in the human body, but always as an unfortunate, sterile sign. The appearance of a comet within its borders implied many grievous ills to the female portion of the population. ^[3]
