Fixed Star Vindemiatrix

Virgo Constellation [Stellarium]

The Sun joins Vindemiatrix star on October 2

Fixed star Vindemiatrix, Epsilon Virginis, is a single star on the right arm of the Maiden, Virgo Constellation. Magnitude 2.83, spectral type G8 III, color yellow. [1]

The traditional name Vindemiatrix comes from Greek through the Latin ‘the grape-harvestress.’ In China, it represents 東次將 (Dōngcìjiāng), meaning The Second Eastern General. Westernized into Tsze Tseang by R.H. Allen, meaning “the Second General.”

Vindemiatrix Astrology

Fixed star Vindemiatrix has the spectral type G8, indicating the planetary nature of the Sun.

VINDEMIATRIX. ε Virginus. A bright yellow star situated on the right wing of Virgo. Its name is said to have been given because it rises in the morning just before the time of vintage. According to Ptolemy, it is of the nature of Saturn and Mercury; to Simmonite, of Saturn and Venus, which is probably a misprint; to Wilson and Pearce, of Saturn, Venus and Mercury, and to Alvidas, of Mercury and Saturn in evil aspect. It gives falsity, disgrace, stealing, and wanton folly and often causes its natives to become widows. [2]

VINDEMIATRIX. ε Virginus. A yellow giant star. Spectral class GO, lying at a distance of 93 light years. This star imparts to its natives impulsiveness, wanton folly, indiscretion, foolishness, scandalous actions, poverty, criticism, depression, and leadership ability. [3]

Vindemiatrix, Epsilon Virginis. The Woman Winegrower in the constellation of Virgo, Vindemiatirx, rises not long before the graoe-harvesting time. On the Midheaven or on the Ascendant this star with its Saturn-Mercury nature is said to help mental concentration and to promote the type of native who engages for architects and businessmen. Tied up with Mars, it results in increased power of thought, tending sometimes to sarcasm and polemics. With Mars also, a danger of injuries is indicated. Badly placed, and especially so if in conjunction with Saturn or Neptune, this star is said to cause a tendency to depressive moods, skepticism a distrustful nature. Tied up with Mercury, this star, if otherwise badly place, will lead to nervous irritability. [4]

Vindemiatrix is a mischief-making star that can indicate disgrace for the native (if male) or the untimely death of a husband (if female). [5]

In older astrology, this star ranks with Algol in having an unmitigated reputation for evil, and some even have noted the arc or aspect between the two is the much-feared 135º, the sesqui-quadrate or sesquisquare. But the underlying reason for their similar reputed lies in the connection of both names with the theme of ‘the Spirit’. The one is the name from which comes our word Alcohol, the other is the star whose rising signifies the time for harvesting the grapes, our main old source of the same. As always, much depends on how one sees events themselves as good or bad. Yes, it does frequently mark the death of someone’s partner in life, whence its appellation ‘The Widowmaker’, which of course prompts us to say: ‘It is bound to since someone dies at every minute or so of every day’. But still, the fact remains it figures strongly and regularly in deaths that are in some way dramatic, newsworthy or are resented in much more than the usual degree by those left behind (assassinations, common criminal murders, executions, airline disasters etc.). At least one unsafe airplane of World War II, known widely as ‘The Widow Maker’ made its first flight on the day that Vindemiatrix culminated, while another which had the same phenomenon at its birth but was successful, was officially named the ‘Black Widow’! Al Muredin ‘The One Sent Forth in the Faith’. This is often the missionary. This is not to say everyone with this star strong in their horoscope will go out and preach the gospel to the heathen, although many do indeed feel a strong religious calling. [6]

Fixed star Vindemiatrix rules the center of the right kidney. When any planet energizes this degree, especially the Moon, there is a fear within these individuals that they will lose their partner. Through their own fear, they project the loss. They are given the opportunity to work with this fear and to release it. If not released from the subconscious level, the fear they carry will materialize, and they become widowed. [7]

Constellation Virgo

Ptolemy makes the following observations; “The stars in the head of Virgo, and that at the top of the southern wing, operate like Mercury and somewhat like Mars: the other bright stars in the same wing, and those about the girdle, resemble Mercury in their influence, and Venus, moderately. . . Those at the points of the feet and at the bottom of the garments are like Mercury, and Mars, moderately.” By the Kabalists it is associated with the Hebrew letter Gimel and the 3rd Tarot Trump “The Empress.” [2]

This constellation is indicative of an abundance in harvest and a fruitfulness of agriculture in general. But when prominent in the charts of eclipses it portends events concerning kings (heads of state) and in this regard can be an ill omen indeed. [5]

In astrology, this constellation and Gemini were the House of Mercury. But usually, and far more appropriately, Virgo’s stars have been given over to the care of Ceres, her namesake, the long-time goddess of the harvest. For her astrological colors, Virgo assumed black speckled with blue; and was thought of as governing the abdomen in the human body, but always as an unfortunate, sterile sign. The appearance of a comet within its borders implied many grievous ills to the female portion of the population. [8]

Mars conjunct Vindemiatrix: Rash, headstrong, indiscreet, energetic, trouble through law, business and friends. [2]

The native is energetic, pushy but not exactly a dynamo of energy. They can become popular and just as easily lose their popularity, generally without justification. Some such natives have or develop a tendency to be headstrong, even indiscreet. Friends and/or associates can create problems. [3]

Increased power of thought, tending sometimes to sarcasm and polemics, a danger of injuries. [4]

(No orb): This is a difficult placement. These natives have a difficult time balancing the fluids in the body purifying the kidneys. There is a drying effect in the internal workings of the body depleting the kidneys of their elasticity. There is increased stimulation of energy at this point; a burning type of energy through the kidneys that generally affects the right kidney, drying out the fluids that purify that area. The kidneys, therefore, cannot function properly, resulting in stagnation. These individuals need to drink ¼ cup of water containing a teaspoon of olive oil daily to lubricate the area to eliminate the drying process and stop infections. Olive oil is a lubricant that does not clog the system and is helpful to many areas of the body. [7]

Judy Garland 0°08′, Charles Bronson 0°42′, Pierre Cardin 1°07′, Marie Antoinette 1°12′, Miley Cyrus 1°16′

Saturn conjunct Vindemiatrix: Cautious, thoughtful, reserved materialistic, hypocritical in religion, loss through speculation, success in business, secret difficulty with a marriage partner. [2]

A tendency to depressive moods, skepticism, a distrustful nature, especially if badly aspected. [4]

(No orb): This planet causes tiny nerve damage within the kidneys, restricting the blood vessels that keep the kidneys healthy. Without adequate blood flow, the kidneys cannot function properly. When this occurs, these individuals usually have the kidney removed. These persons should keep a warm pack on the back at the kidneys to keep the blood vessels open. Natural papaya juice would be an excellent remedy, as well as raspberry tea. These measures must be done daily to take care of this weakened area. This will eliminate much of the discomfort and will keep this organ from breaking down completely. [7]

  1. This sits right on my ascendent in libra. I didn’t really understand the statement “engages for architects and business men.” Could you elaborate or explain a little more?

  2. My transiting vindemiatrix id currently crossing over my natal one. They are conjunct exact in the twelfth house. This implies something intensr

    • Vindemiatrix is a FIXED star. There is relatvely little movement except over tremendous (astronomical) periods of time. Therefore, there is no such thing as transiting Vindemiatrix.

However, if a planet or angle in your natal or progressed chart touches this point, you can interpret its influence.

  3. Hi, I was born september 25, 1956 I am 57years old I notice I am having very, very, very high blood pressure now that the lunar eclipse is upon us. Having problems with my daughter who was born march 12, 1986 my life pretty much sucks right now daughter lost my grand kids to cps I tried to help her take care of them but my mom had a stroke didn’t juggle both of the problems well have a vindemiatrix do you think things will get any better. Ha!!!

  5. Interesting article… My Venus is at 9 degrees Libra and is my chart ruler (rising planet with Libra ascending). The most amazing relationship of my life was with a man who died in such a way that it was extensively covered in the news. I was at the time, unfamiliar with Vindemiatrix.

  6. This is within a half degree of my North Node. I was attracted to architecture as a study but became an accountant. I have never been widowed or experienced a sudden death of a loved one.

  7. Hey, mine is conjunct Pluto. How come no interpretation for Pluto? Seems like a double whammy of death there….

    • The guy who wrote the most about planets on stars was Vivian Robson in 1923, before Pluto was discovered. It’s up to our generation to work out what it means. Hopefully, over time, these comments will fill in some gaps.

    • Same With me, Pluto on Vindematrix libra, in 8th house…it always depends on aspects pluto makes with other natal planets

  8. I wish it were the Widow Maker instead of having him cheat on me and go through the pains of a divorce. I have it in paran with Uranus, as per our fixed star genius, Brady.

  9. Hello Jamie,

Is Mars strong in this degree that is within the orb of Vindemiatrix? Owing to its Saturnine side, does that work on elevating the better qualities of Mars as it matures? Since, Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Yet, this star is in the tropical sign of Libra – the sign of Mars’s debility. Mars seems to encounter challenges here. And so, does that strengthen the Martian traits or weaken them? I have Mars on 8’27 Libra. It feels very karmic.

    Thank you.

    • Greetings fellow orbie 🙂 my mars is at 8°50, in the 8th (shacking up with Saturn, Pluto, and Jupiter!!)
Oh, and my mercury is at 8°31 (Aries, sun 14° aries) you could say everything up top, for me, checks out 😳

  10. Natal Chiron at 10 degrees aries opposing this star Vindemiatrix . Widow at 45 yrs old.

  11. I do not think it is true like this. Way too negative. I am libra, sun conjoint vindemiatrix and I am not a widow. I am even not married. I think the energy must be more subtile and bring also something good.

  12. My natal sun is at 8 degrees 50 Libra. At 76 years of age myself I am for the third time living with and caring for a partner during long months and years of his terminal illness. Learning about Vindemiatrix in my early 20s I mistakenly thought I might avoid this fate by not legally marrying my partners. Prior to this I married legally at 18 years of age. It was a disaster; 3 years later he left me destitute, homeless and pregnant for another woman. I do not count my life as a tragedy but it has had its challenges. I married again legally 16 years later when I was facing a life-threatening health crisis. I attribute my survival to the love and confidence of my husband. He died five years later of alcoholism. My next partnership was the love of my life. We were together 20 years until he succumbed to lung cancer after a lengthy undiagnosed and crippling neurological condition. I have been living with his best friend for 10 years now and he is nearing end stage dementia. Given my age this is probably my last go-around. I do not regard Vindemiatrix as a terrible fate. Perhaps it is a denotation of a special capacity I have to serve and love others. I have reaped much from my experiences with this kind of loving.

  13. What if Jupiter AND Saturn AND Porrima (within 1deg) all are conjunct?

  14. I have natal Uranus@9Libra56 conjunct Vindemiatrix (00”) and MC@9Libra07 conjunct Vindemiatrix (049”). Hoping for positivity and higher vibration of these conjunctions to play out.
